Any advice on hand held metal testers on a budget?

I'm thinking of buying a hand held metal tester for jewellery - am I right in assuming that they're reasonably reliable. I understand they only go so deep below the surface but does that matter?

How much should I look to spend? Does the buget versions make much difference from the more expensive models?
