Hi ladies,

I''m just trying to figure out how much a standard bustle normally costs so I can factor it into my dress budget.

Thanks.

I can''t quite remember, it was either $5 per point or $8 per point and i think I had 6 points.

It depends how complicated you want your bustle to be.

Mine was a super-reinforced 1-point button bustle and IIRC, it was around $20-25.

My alterations were $300 total plus $85 to steam the dress. The bustle was around $150/$180 I believe, but my dress was pretty complicated in the back (the Pronovias "Medina"). I had 13 ties under the dress, all color coded to match with the correct ribbons. The seamstress took in the waist by about an inch which was more expensive with all the ruching.

Also, be SURE you bring a person to learn to do the bustle and a backup person just in case. My fiance was going to have to bustle the dress at our pre-wedding photo session because my mom wasn't in town yet but we ended up leaving it down for pictures (plus, what does a guy know about bustling a dress?? .

I was basically thinking in terms of the simplest, plainest, bustle possible.

Is it also the case that I could just sew a loop somewhere on the train of the dress and and just hook it on one of the buttons or does a bustle require more than that?

Mayerling, this is pretty much what my bustle was, and it can be done easily -- but you want to make sure the button is reinforced REALLY well and that the loop is of a very sturdy cording and also reinforced REALLY well. The fewer points on the bustle, the greater the stress it puts on the dress and the more likely it is that the bustle will break. Mine lasted perfectly well through the reception, but the seamstress told me to bring a big safety pin with me that day, just in case. I loved the simplicity of the look enough to take the risk, though!

The seamstress where I work charges $25 for an English bustle and $35 for a French. $5 per point added to a French. Anything else probably starts at $40, depending on how complicated it can get more expensive.

Thanks for the reply Octavia. I really hadn''t considered that I needed to get something reinforced so the dress doesn''t tear.

Ok, so getting a bustle doesn''t seem to be very expensive. I guess I have to pray that this is the only alteration I need so that my alterations don''t add up to half the price of the dress.
