My apology if this post is redudant. I did a search but didn''t find any posts.

I live in Washington DC area and of course have a need to set my stones from time to time. I have been using a setter in NYC but it is so inconvient. Can someone please recommend a good stone setter in the area? Thanks in advance!

Quest Jewelers in Fairfax for DC Metro.
For DC proper, try giving I. Gorman a call.

Ditto this. They restored my grandmother''s wedding set and set it with the sapphire (those are shown in my avatar), plus they''re custom setting my amethyst sugarloaf as we speak, and it''s where my SO and I picked out my engagement ring. Pete and his brother Huan are both great to work with. I know many PSers have used them in the past for setting, custom work, and purchases.

delayedreaction and vc10um, thanks for your recommendation.

Well, I used Quest for three custom settings including my diamond ring, and was very pleased with their jobs. But that was at least 5 years ago. Their business model is changing and they no longer care for small jobs.

About 2 years ago I had one post-back earring that had a broke-off post, Quest charged me $50 to weld it back.

I asked Pete about setting my color stones in the rings I bought from LOGR, he showed no interest and would not provide me with a quote. He talked about color stones in a discarding manner and said that garnet or tourmaline are too soft for rings.

Recently I asked for a quote to set my tsavorite and Quest quoted a very high figure. I decided to go with WhiteFlash, then Quest immediate offered to come down by about $500 to match WF price. I stuck with WF. He also complained about PS''ers asking him for quotes but disappeared after hearing the numbers. I think I know why now.

I am sure Quest still does high-quality jobs but past experience had made it too uncomfortable for me to pay them another visit.

Any other setters in DC area, please?

Hi yingh! I am from Singapore. I had a hard time finding a reliable setter too. They setter here charges USD 10 , for mounting a simple 4 prongs ring. But they are used to setting diamonds and not colored stones. They had badly scratched one of my peridot before. I thought it will be good to find a setter who does lapidary work too. Well, in case the size of the stone needs to be resize, scratches needs to be touch up...etc It will be easier. I found Michael E. Yes I sent my entire parcel (consisting of ring mounts and loose stones) all the way from Singapore to US:) He agreed that scratching customer''s stone is unacceptable and is able to ensure that my tourmalines and peridot will not have scratches under magnification. He mentioned that he will take some photos once the stone is mounted before shipping it back to me. The parcel had just reaches Michael 2 days ago. I shall keep you update as soon!
