I know that white gold and platinum rings can be plated with rhodium for the shiny factor. Is there a reason why more rings aren''t made of mainly rhodium and some alloy? Like 80% Rhodium and 20% platinum. If there are places that sell it, where? I can''t find any on the internet or in brick and mortar stores...

because rhodium is extremely expensive.

I believe it was trading at a price that is similar to platinum... if people can afford platinum why wouldn''t they be able to afford rhodium? Maybe its really soft and chips easy? Couldn''t an alloy be used to strengthen it like Ru or something?

If it's the same price as platinum why not just get platinum? It doesn't need to be replated, only repolished.

Rhodium price hits a record $9,800/oz

New York (Platts)--22May2008
Rhodium, long regarded the most expensive precious metal, became even
more costly this week as the price soared to $9,800/oz. One dealer even quoted
$9,875/oz. The Metals Week New York Dealer price soared to the range of
$9,450-$9,800 from $9,325-9,455/oz at the previous assessment on May 15.
"It started going up late last week and it has not stopped," said one
merchant. "People are saying that the target is $10,000/oz."

Good Question about rhodium. Thanks julie for the info about rhodium prices...can you believe 9,800/oz...ouch.

wow that is pretty pricey

Im looking for a solid rhoidum ring too. im desperatly trying to think of rings ideas that i would like to wear, or i just wont get one!!

i get the points about why not just get platinum... because its rhodium...the worlds most expensive metal...and is something that is unique and rare. that appeals to me and *could* be enought to make me care less about design.

i have read a blog where a guy called Eric Frueh (website tag name) said he has been making them for years (written ''07) but i cant find him on the net.

another place, (maybe the same site, i cant remember sorry) had a guy who suggested getting the rhodium from a chemist and adding about 20% platinum, like you stated. but apparently the rhodium comes in powder form and this makes it harder to smelt.

im going to have a bit more of a look about for jewelers who already make rhodium rings, but if i cant find any, and i still like the idea in a while, ill let you know how i get on having one made.

other materials i have seen are extinct wood and dinosaur bone...but thats not that rare really.

I will be following this thread with interest, because my FI really wants a pure rhodium ring. That said, we''ve looked and looked and can''t find any, so we''ll likely just go with platinum.
