I got engaged in September and the day i was engaged notice the center stone (87 pt oval) was loose. The next day I took it to my parent''s jeweler and they said that one of the prongs was cracked, needed to be fixed, and that they were cut too deep. Took the ring back to the jeweler we purchased it from and he put a whole new head on it. (The head does look different - the prongs look like they cover more of the diamond now) No other problems with the center stone, just one small pave stone popped out when it got cleaned last week, but they found it and put it pack in (I know it is likely that pave stones will come loose).

Anyways, at times I get very paranoid about my ring, if I knock it on something (never really hard, just a tap), that the stone will come out. Like I said, it is an oval stone, but with 4 prongs (I want to get 6-prongs, but that would not go with setting, which I love). I do have insurance, but I think it is more the sentimental value that would be lost if it comes out (FI specifically chose this stone). Is my paranoia normal? Anyone have advice to help me chill out?!

You've only had your ering for 4 months and you've had 2 issues with it. I can understand why you'd be a little nervous. It isn't recommended that pave be cleaned with the ultrasonic cleaners.

Please post a photo of your ring. It sounds pretty -- pave and an oval!!! (I think you already posted it but more photos would be welcome)

Completely normal, I''d say (that, or I''m weird right along with you) - I check to see if my stone is loose on an almost daily basis, because better safe than sorry! I just check to see if it''s at all loose using the edge of my nail against the edge of the girdle: it''s not a substitute for a jeweler''s check, but it''s a good heads up.

That said, odds of your stone popping out from a gentle tap are slim to none with basic maintenance - there have been a few horror stories on board of members checking out their non-jewelry-minded friends rings and seeing entire prongs missing, and *their* stones have stayed put. Keep being careful with it, but don''t go overboard - enjoy that baby!

It''s normal paranoia. I''ve had several problems with my engagement ring, including chipping it and temporary losing outside when I took a glove off. I''m fairly paranoid about the ring. I finally just got it covered under homeowners insurance which helps a bit with the paranoia, but it''s not exactly replaceable still.

thanks for letting me know i''m not weird ;) i tried to post pics last night but it wasn''t working...i need to take some better ones

Such a pretty ring...as time goes by you will get less paranoid. Everytime I hit my ring on something (which isnt very often) I always stop
and check the stone/mounting just to be sure there is no obvious damage. I also tap my stone with my fingertip to see if there is any
movement in my stone. I dont know if all this is normal (maybe I''m paranoid too

). Also, the insurance is my reassurance. I love my
pear stone but...after see soooo many beautiful stones here on PS I know I could find another (even though I would always miss my first
and be really bummed about it).

So, relax and try to enjoy your ring. Its really beautiful!
