Hi FI and I will have a destination wedding in Hawaii, and then just spend about 2 weeks there, islan hop a little.
Now I''m debating whether I should take my ering w/ me, it''s very nice and to us, expensive (we dont have so much money having just finished school). I reallly want to wear it during the wedding, and have photographs wearing it. But I know I''m not going to take it when i''m going to the beach or excursions and such. and I''d be worried to leave it in the hotel, besides we''ll be traveling to another island, etc. What do you guys plan to do or did? tia

Get it insured and take it! Your ring was meant to be WORN, and obviously it's something you want to include in your wedding.

FI and I just got back from a 2-week Hawaii vacation. I wore my ring. When we went places that I worried about it getting "hurt" (i.e. beach, volcano/lava hiking, etc.) I wore it on a chain around my neck. I did leave it in our hotel room on a couple occasions, we just put the "do not disturb" hanger on the door and plopped the ring (and our iPods) in the in-room safe. Or you can ask the front desk if they have a safe you can use.

In the end it really has to be what you're comfortable with. I think if I were traveling to Uganda and sleeping in a tent I wouldn't take it. But you hardly need to worry in Hawaii!

If you know you''re not going to wear it during your honeymoon, why not send it home with a family member who will be attending your wedding? That way you''ll have it for the wedding and the photographs, but you won''t have to worry about keeping it safe afterwards. And definitely make sure it''s insured. =)

thank you so much! getting it insured it an excellent idea :)

we had a DW in hawaii, i wore my ring for everything. i would never leave it in a hotel room. we then went and honeymooned in tahiti and again, i wore it at all times, even while snorkeling near the ocean reef barrier. but it was also insured. i totally agree, get it insured and then you won't worry but i would not leave it in a hotel room, no way no how...i'd rather have it on me and have something happen to it than stolen out of a hotel room or something (obviously prefer NEITHER but you get my drift!).

By the way, do you ladies mean get travel insurance? or get it insured permanently?

Timely thread for us!

Does one usually get renters insurance and list the ring under that or a specific jewerly-type insurance?

I''m getting married this August in Florida. I am DEFINITELY bringing my e-ring. I want it to be included in pictures too! I hardly ever take mine off of my finger. I think I would feel like I was missing something without it! You can insure it before you go, and you can always cancel it when you get back if money is an issue. That way you''re covered when you''re down there.

INSURANCE FOR THE RING. Travel insurance I doubt will cover something like that.

To insure a ring, you can usually get a rider on your renters insurance if you'd like from a place like state farm. BUT be careful because many of those policies require you to work with THEIR jewelers for replacement. That is like a PSer's nightmare since many of us have spent months looking for the right stone with a certain jeweler.

Otherwise, you can get a jewelry only policy from a place like Jeweler's Mutual online. The nice thing about JM is that they will let you work with any jeweler you choose to replace your ring if it gets lost or damaged. You can just fill out the form online, give them a CC for the premium (I think between 1-3% of the value per year depending on where you live), and then just send in your appraisal, pictures, and certs. That's it! Then you're covered in case anything happens to your ring anywhere.

i have my ring insured under a jewelry policy with chubb so that i can get a cash payout if anything happens, but there are other places like JM and sometimes your home or renters insurance will have jewelry specific policies. but do not just put it under your regular insurance, get a specific separate jewelry policy. there are a ton of insurance threads in PS so just search for insurance and read up on what the diff options are.

In addition to insuring your rings, call the hotels you''re staying at and inquire as to whether or not they have in-room safe. If not, ask if they have safe deposit boxes where you can store valuables when not in your room (not just your rings but also your money, trav. checks, etc., watches...). Nearly all hotels offer one option or both. It''s worth using them for peace of mind.

definitely insure the ring. compared to the cost of replacing the ring, the cost of insurance is quite reasonable.
i would also call ahead and ask the hotel what options they offer for securing valuables. under many state laws, if you put it in the in-room safe and it is stolen, the hotel isn''t responsible. even if you give it to the hotel to put in their safe, in many states the hotel isn''t responsible for loss or theft beyond a maximum amount, which is usually only a few hundred dollars. usually, only way to make the hotel responsible beyond this minumu amount is to actually make an written agreement with the hotel for them to put it in their safe and take responsibility for the full value of the ring. these requirements are usually on the piece of paper on the back of the door along with the maximum rates, taxes, and other required information. your hotel should be able to tell you this information. (if they can''t, you might be better off wearing it than leaving it in the hotel).
that said, in the event of theft your insurance would probably still cover, you just wouldn''t be able to get anything from the hotel. i just wanted to make sure you were aware that just b/c you put it in a safe in the hotel doesn''t mean the hotel is taking much responsibility for it!
