Hi everyone!

This Etsy seller in Singapore has beautiful but costly items! My dear hubby actually purchased a lavender colored bead (I sent him a quick hint) and it didn't come with a certificate.

The seller apologized. She said most people did not care for the certificate and she threw it away shortly after shipping it. She offered to send it back to the lab for testing if I ship back to her. But I JUST got it!!! The listing says 'grade A Burmese jade'

Anyone purchase from her before? The seller is Gemstbyrui. (Sorry for ugly pics! I was in my PJs Christmas mornings opening presents with the kids)

Here's the listing of my bead

My 5 cents.
depending on how much it cost is it worth sending it back, I presume at your expense?
the other thing is, the jade certificates I’ve seen, apart from often being in Chinese, it’s impossible to know if it’s a good and reputable lab or not. Obviously you could send it yourself to GIA or AGL for a trustworthy report but that will cost you $75 or so plus shipping.
so if you really like the bead and it wasn’t hundreds of dollars I’d just keep it and wear it.
im trying to buy jade pieces myself but I’ve already learnt it’s a minefield out there. Especially buying online from other countries and if you get a certificate, how can you be sure it’s trustworthy. So I’m just buying pieces I love the look and colour of and for $300 or less. That way I’m not risking a lot of money.

Ask her which lab in Singapore would she test at? Nanyang Gem Institute?

Not bought her stuff but they look reasonably legit to me. Depends on the price point.

If the bead is around us100-200 that's a fair pricepoint from retail pov. This lavender with green material is fairly common. It's hollowed out to be worn so and makes it look icier/translucent.

I am told that her usual testing lab is "Guangdong province quality supervision precious metal and gemstone testing station (zhu hai)"

That means her China seller uses that. Rmb 5/report.

I believe my husband paid just under 469USD for the bead...I am so torn about what to do. Getting it tested here will cost me 75$.

What happens if it is treated? Does she refund your money, and how would your husband feel?

It could be better to just keep it and not get it certified depending on the answers to these two questions. Otherwise my recomendation would be to get it tested locally (as long as she agrees to accept the return if your local lab detects any treatment). $75 is small compared to the kind of shipping and custom charges you are likely to get lumped with sending anything to singapore (Actually I had someone ship me something of roughly similar value from the US recently and it incurred 60 USD in shipping charges just going one way for priority(/with tracking) mail through USPS.... haven't had anyone try to charge me singaporean GST yet but it has a good chance of picking up another additional 7% charge. If you ship it both ways and pay for the Nanyang Gemological Laboratory report it shouldnt cost less than 150 USD. It should be said by way of explanation that singapore is not cheap -- it is consistently rated by the economist as the most expensive city in the world to live in, even the cost of the singaporean lab is not likely to be much less than your local lab.).

It’s S$65 (approx $50) for a cert by NGI in Singapore. But given the cost of shipping etc it may not be worth shipping back to the seller. Above S$400 and you will tend to incur GST for anything coming into Singapowhich is 7% plus S$20-$30 service charge by the delivery/postal service.

Personally I tend not to cert anything below S$1000. But understand that the comfort threshold $ will vary for everyone. If testing it will give you peace of mind to wear the jade then maybe it’s worth the cost? If not then just wear and enjoy?

Thanks for all your help! I appreciate everyone's input and it is really helping me enjoy my gift. I am leaning towards keeping it. My husband wants me to just enjoy it without necessarily getting it tested, he doesn't feel it's necessary.

Now...to just find the perfect chain to match!!

Wish the sun was out to get good pics

hey a little late to reply but Rui is a friend of mine! from what i know she frequently sends her items for NGI testing so i might be bias but i do trust her on her items and expertise : ) Even on small items . Another thing tho is that if you don't need a cert, some of this lab companies such as raffles lab [sg] etc can do a consult at about $30-$35 i think! Just to put yourself at ease that is one more affordable option! [ oh dear just realized you aren't from singapore so my last suggestion probably doesnt apply].
