Seems that most people here upgrade to larger diamonds,
sometimes sacrificing color/clarity (but not cut) to get a larger stone.

Has anyone upgraded to a smaller diamond but with higher color, clarity, and/or better cut?
Just curious.

I didn''t go smaller, but I only went up .02c (.93 to .95c) with my wedding ring. I got a much better cut, a slightly better color and the same clarity, but much more eye clean. The cut was the reason I did it.

i would,i was thinking of down size my wife''s 3ct SI1 stone to a 2.75 ct VS stone but with prices keep going up

it would cost too much money to down size.

CF this is a thoughtworthy question seeing as most folks pick cut/carat weight above clarity at first. I have seen some vote the other way, however, but usually not after an initial priority of C has been determined.

I was lucky enough to acquire my ring AFTER finding the diamond ed forums.

Good question

I will be upgrading in clarity and size but I could see some who go for very big diamonds doing this later on

I think most people in the under 0.50 to just over 1 carat would be counting size as a must have which most posters are getting first time if my judgement is correct.

I doubt there will by many who downgraded in size for the other 2 C''s because carat weight is very obvious from a great distance. I''ve upgraded my diamond to improve the colour and clarity but mostly to improve the cut. The original cut was quite poor. The size difference was also minimal (0.05ct increase, I think) but I also wanted to re-use the original setting which was very unique.

Yes! My first upgrade was from a 1.77 EGL H Vs2 princess (horrible quality) to a 1.6 or so G Vs2 fantastic quality GIA stone! But we all know that that didn''t last too long :)

I didn''t but one of my friends did. She went from a 1.75ct poorly-cut rb from a mall store to a 1.6?ct ideal rb from a local B&M for her 5 year anniversary. She kept the same setting and her new stone is fabulous. I believe she got the 129-facet rb and it looks bigger than her 1.75ct was.

My first diamond was a 1.23 G VS1 that wasn''t well-cut. The second diamond was a 1.29 H SI that was exceptionally cut, BUT the first stone had a diameter average of 7.15mm and the second even though larger in ctw, was only 7.10mm. So in reality I got a smaller looking stone and a better cut! So in essence it was like an upgrade to a smaller diamond.

I guess I did that. I kept my original 3/4 solitaire, and had it reset from aYG setting to a WG setting. Then I purchased a new diamond -1/2 carat in a YG setting. I liked the stone, which was a better cut, but similar in clarity and color. However, it seemed too small (even though the size dif was negligible) so I ended up upgrading THAT one to another 3/4 carat stone with ideal cut and slightly better color (clarity was lower). I will always keep the original 3/4 diamond, but am told by hubby that the new 3/4 is a "stepping stone" and that I should start looking around the first of the year for something around 1.5 carats to upgrade to. He doesn''t know it, but I''m already *looking*

It wasn''t an upgrade but when I bought a diamond ring within my budget I chose a .25 F VS1 RB over a larger stone of lesser quality. Given that I could only afford a small stone, knowing that it is of high quality made me feel very good about it.

I made the same choice. For the amount my husband and I had to spend back when we became engaged (both in college at the time) I picked out a smaller certified stone of good color/clarity (G VS2) over a bigger stone of lesser color/quailty (can''t remember specs).

I guess Carat weight does matter quite a bit?
