Pictures of Pt./Aqua studs for my wife''s birthday. I don''t have the appraisal yet, but I believe they are 6+mm, as I ordered 6-6.5mm stones and ended up having about 6 pair to choose from. Very nice color, although difficult to capture on camera, as always.

The color looks good, though I am not sure how much PhotoShop enhanced it. They do show much potential, do you have them in your hands or are they being sent to you? If you have them, it would be nice to see photos in natural light. Of course, you would have to take care your wife does not catch you! :)

Very pretty!

Actually the pictures were taken in natural light, with some fill flash added. However, the sun was going down and the light was fading. I agree that the photoshopping wasn''t the best as I worked from the reduced image for the 3rd picture, so there definitely some compression on compression and loss of detail. It also boosted the highlights and sharpened a bit too much. I was hoping that at least it removed some of the color cast caused by light reflecting off of leaves.

We have a sick toddler. If I find some time this weekend, I can give it a better effort from the full 9mb file.

Any my wife is very used to me taking her jewelry out side to photograph.

So sorry about your toddler Derek.

For some reason, I misread your posting and thought you had not given your wife her studs. It would be fun to see some pictures of her wearing her studs, but of course, your toddler comes first. They do look like they have a nice color though and from what you described, PhotoShop probably did not enhance the color all that much...

Thanks. He isn''t acting "sick" much, except when he explodes out of one end or the other. Hopefully, we''re past the worst.

As with my prior purchase, he had some stones that were more intensely blue, but they tended to trade saturation for brilliance.

I''ll try to get some model shots this weekend.

What a beautiful blue, your wife will love them

Derek,

Aquamarine studs in that color, 6mm rounds, six pair to choose from? Something sounds very wrong. There are stones of that color coming out of Africa, but I have yet to see a pair that large, never mind multiple pair. Suggest a Gem ID from a GIA trained graduate gemologist.

Richard,
Is that the colour of the original Santa Marias?

Harriet,

Well, it looks like typical Santa Maria or Santa Maria Africana material it though images can be deceiving and doing gem id from an image is a fools gambit. Typically darker aquamarine has a strong gray mask.

In my experience fine dark aquamarine is rarer than its brother beryl, emerald. So when someone has a choice of 6 pair of 6+ millimeter rounds an alarm goes off in my head.

Thanks for the heads up, Richard.

Richard,

3 points:

1. There were 5-6 pair total. 3-4 were much lighter. I don't remember if it was 3 or 4 as I only looked at one pair for comparision. One pair was darker and even more expensive, but they were both less brilliant and distinctly smaller. I'd guess about 5mm. I didn't have them measured as I wasn't interested in them on appearance alone.

2. The pictures probably overemphasize the color. I'd say the closest the pictures come is where the one is laying on its side.

3. I bought them from Tom Tivol. While that name may not mean anything to most here, his family has owned the premier jewelry store in Kansas City for about 100 years. Tom left the family business a few years ago to go out on his own. He is a GG and I believe a CG. Although I've only known Tom a year or so, my father has known his father for 40 years and one of my wife's friends dated Tom in high school and maintains a friendly relationship.

I'm sure most of your concern is because the photos slightly over represent the shade of blue.

To get a better sense of the color, look at my other post here This was my earlier project and I was trying to match it as closely as possible. The earrings are slightly more blue, but are a reasonably close match.

Beautiful! I love them!!!!

I have such respect for anyone who can accurately photograph colored stones. I just can''t ever get anything I really like. But maybe that can be my justification for a new ring-flash unit!

Anyhow, here''s another attempt. I included a common household item for color reference. I think there''s a bit too much red, but I got it as close as I could. Color is better, saturation on the upper stone is a weak as I think it was over lit, a bit.

Kckunesq,

I know Tom Tivol, he has an excellent and well deserved reputation and your latest image tells a much different story than your first. The stones in this image look more like the quality I am used to seeing. I withdraw my suggestion. Who is it that is always saying, "don't trust images on computer screen"! I should read my own posts.

The color of the image plus your statement about the number of pair available rang a bell. I have a few smaller pair in that color, they are African but I don't recall seeing a 6+ mm stone, never mind a pair, available at any price.

My apologies,

Oh they''re lovely!

Very pretty! I love aquas and those look really nice!

I also experienced difficulty photographing my aqua, but found bathroom lighting to be best suited for the job!

Your wife''s earrings turned out well and I think the cut is nice.

My apologies,

NO apologies required. I was trying to say that I wasn''t pleased with the color in one of my earlier posts, but I must not have done that very well. I was hoping that at least they showed the cut detail well enough. I appreciate you being on the lookout for all of us here. No hard feelings on my part, I assure you. If I went overboard describing my faith in Tom, its only because when I''ve described his business (business by appointment, no visible store-front, etc) here before, many have jumped in suggesting he must not be legit. I''m thrilled that you can vouch for him, as I absolutely love working with him.

That is where I was able to take the last picture. Outdoors the light had too many sources of interference. I recently installed "daylight" quality CFs in the overhead bath lights. I believe they are intended to be about 5200 degrees kelvin. Set on auto white balance, my D300 was producing images a bit too warm, (maybe because the flash was warmer than the ambient light?).
I adjusted the WB to 4760k
