i remember seeing many different styles in the jewelry stores, during the 1980''s.

They had a big come back in two years ago (in 2004 I think). I still see a lot of costume cocktail rings around. I don''t think they are out of style.

Aren''t those called ''right hand rings'' these days?

Geez, I hope not. I have a few in my collection, and I still wear them. My only isse right now is that most of my cocktail/RHRs from the 90s are in yellow gold. I have a tanzanite that I''d eventually like to have reset into a 2-tone ring of some kind. Of course, by the time I get around to that, yellow gold will be all the rage again.

It never ends . . . . . .

When I think of "cocktail rings" I picture the oversized rings my mother wore in the ''60s. Colored stones, big mountings (ballerina, etc)....

I think todays RHRs are usually more refined and less garish...

Widget''s comment shed some light on it, but I was going to ask, "what exactly is a ''coctail ring''?"

I''m sure there''s no rule, but maybe another way to look at it would be that a "cocktail ring" is too big, bold, uncomfortable to be worn everyday, but would be OK at "dress-up" events...particularly in the evening.

Actually, I suspect the term itself is dated..

I''m with widget. I think of them as being quite large and overstated. Something you only wear when getting really dressed up. The RHR is more of a refined look. IMHO at least.

Here is my favorite *cocktail* ring. Does this qualify as one? Or is it a RHR?

It''s my 3 ct. tanzanite that I''d like to have reset one of these days. I never was crazy about the princess stones on the sides, and the quality of the setting is not great. I bought it (over 10 years ago) for the color and shape of the tanzanite.

That tanzanite is gorgeous. I agree on getting it reset. 3 carats, wow!!!

That''s what I think a cocktail ring is too, and I think that''s why there''s more costume ones than real ones around because you would need a really big stone or a lot of stones, so it could be expensive.

The tazanite is gorgeous. I think a setting makeover would be nice.

maybe some might call them "cluster rings"

you know, the ones that use tiny diamonds to form a cluster mostly from rounds and baguettes.

Hi Dancing Fire ~

I don''t think cocktail rings have gone out of style ... the style for cocktail rings have just changed over time. This is one of my favorite "vintage" cocktail rings.

Of course, now that we are into 2006 ... I see that the "cocktail" ring has become more substantial and tasteful ... more clean lines and bigger center stones like this one ...

Mmmm beautiful pearl ring!

Another thing I remember about my mom''s cocktail rings...she had no interest or knowledge about gemstones...she viewed them like ''fashion accessories'' that matched certain favorite outfits.

Hi DiamondLil ~

Ouuu, I just love your ring!

The blue is so intense! I too, have a tanzanite ring, however it is a lighter blueish purple ... if I remember correctly, I did not pay too much for it, I am sure the quality of mine was lacking, however it was alot of fun to wear.

I see your thinking about a setting change? How are you going to reset it? Keep us updated ... sounds exciting!

Take care,

Hi Dancing Fire ~

I know what your talking about, I have one that I bought in the mid 80''s. It had a center stone about 2 cts Oval and it was surronded by tiny round and baguette diamonds, and was yellow gold.

It''s actually quite fun to see how the "cocktail" ring has evolved over time. I think about the 90''s is when the cocktail rings started to get more "clean" looking, and less hectic and scattered.

I just love all jewelry

... My daughter say''s that If I won the lottery, that I would open up a lil'' jewelry botique and have a lil'' bit of everything in it along with a coffee/tea room! Sounds great to me!

That''s my thought.
Yet another DeBeers marketing ploy.

I think cocktail rings still exist ... these are the ones that are bigger and make more of a statement, and you would only wear these on a dress ''em up occaision. I have some of these kind. Would feel funny wearing something like this to work, or to the grocery store.

I think of Right hand rings as being very pretty, however not as blingy, and the style definately makes a statement of the wearer, and you could and would wear these rings on a daily basis, to work, to the store, to PTA.

Just my silly thinkin'' though.

When I was at my last job as a manager of a big box discount retailer, the jewelry counter there was big business, especially the costume cocktail rings! Every time we had a shipment, we would sell out of the knock-off rings in sterling silver or even the totally fake stuff...I kept having to call the buyers to get more stock... I noticed that 20, 30, 40-somethings even were buying these rings, so my guess is that the cocktail ring styles aren''t dead yet! When I was at that job, we lived (and I worked) in a very affluent neighborhood, women would come in wearing their furs and Chanel, and then buy these $20 rings, lol! Therefore, I think the style is still desirable, but like some have said, cleaner lines are all the rage, rather than the cluster looks of the 80''s.
