Are these prongs right?

Hi everyone,

I just received delivery of an engagement ring but I'm not sure if there is an issue with the prongs of the ring. There is a quite a bit of space between the diamond and metal of the prong. This is my first time purchasing expensive jewelry so I'm not sure what to expect and what is considered a proper setting. What I received looks different than the pictures of the ring on the vendor's website, so I have a feeling that there might be an issue. Could the knowledgeable folks here please take a look and let me know your thoughts? I've attached some pictures below - unfortunately I don't have a very good camera.

For reference here is the setting I purchased. It was semi-custom as I had the head set in yellow gold. https://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/elegant-solitaire-engagement-ring-3581.htm

Thank you.

Can you circle on the picture the specific prong issue that you are questioning?

Hi adlgel, see the below pictures. What I'd like to know is whether it is normal to have a large gap/space between the diamond and the metal of the prong, and whether there are any long-term durability issues with this. Thank you.IMG_1656_LI.jpgIMG_1655_LI.jpg

It looks like the head is too big for the diamond. There is definitely a lot more space between the sides of the prongs and the pavilion of the diamond than I usually see in similar settings. Even the vendor phot shows the sides of the prongs tucked closer to the pavilion of the diamond.

The stone appears to be seated pretty well in the prongs. The space you circled are part of the design and allow light to enter and it's easier to clean.

Yes, the head has a curve which provides a different aesthetic and allows more space around the pavillion. It's visually different than the prongs in Kaycee's photo which are very straight and follow the lines of the pavillion more closely. Both are safe. But if you were expecting the same head but in yellow gold, I can understand your complaint.

I like space around my stone. They can get pretty grimy in the tight spots :???:

It looks well set to me.

It is great - you will be able to put a larger stone in anytime you chose.
and best of all you can easily clean it - so often I see this type of setting touching the pavilion of the diamond and the gunk is never able to be cleaned out by ordinary owners.

I would not be happy with this. I agree with @Kaycee2018
the head is too big for the stone and it doesn’t have the same look or flow of the settings pictured on the website. That’s disappointing.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Seems like the opinion is mixed and to be honest I’m not sure how I feel about the different look. I think I’ll reach out to the vendor to see what they think.

While the vendors listing that shows computer rendered images of this setting with a stone set in it, doesn’t look like yours.
The real life photos, shown under the ‘recently purchased’ tab, while not the best angle to view the area, look to me to be closer to what you received than the renderings.

I don’t think that space is a durability/security issue unless the seats of the prongs are wonky too - which I cannot tell by these photos for sure, but don’t look to be.

To me, it looks awkward. It reminds me of a little girl trying to walk in her mother's shoes that are just too big. The stone just does not fit. I like the original image from the website - that is how it is supposed to sit. And that is how most people have it set. If that is what you originally liked and wanted, that is what you should have received.

I like the space for cleaning but your ring doesn’t look like the one on the vendor photo to me.

There will be adequate room for cleaning as is shown on vendor website. I think what you received definitely looks like wrong size basket for the stone. If it were me, I would absolutely send it back.

Except if you think there is a chance of taking advantage of any upgrade policy at any time in the future -because that will save you hundreds of dollars.
And you will be able to have a clean sparkly diamond.

Maybe it’s time for a poll

I still think the more prominently displayed rendering photos look different than the past sold actual photos do on the website. The same difference on OP’s ring.
and agree it looks to be less pronounced the larger the stone looks.

What size is your stone?

Curved prongs rather than straight - I love the look actually. Plus one for easier cleaning. I’d be happy with this.

Why - there is only one person to vote.
Yes, it's different to 'as advertised'.
Worsa or bettera?
not our decision - but we can inform - thats our role.

I’m so sorry for the confusion.
I didn’t mean a poll to vote on OP’s specific ring.
That’d be a pretty jerk thing to do, even for someone like me. :/

I started the poll thread already.
It’s to ask if PS’ers would appreciate a larger than necessary (peg?) head for your current diamond, to save money when and if you upgrade to a larger diamond later - as you suggested. And whether or not you’d like to know that before hand or have the vendor do it for you - because there’s an awesome upgrade policy.
