So, a while back on a trip to Australia when I knew nothing about jewellery I picked up some opals set in silver. Now I'm wondering if they are real or fakes and what are they worth.. let me know what you think! :)

The first one looks like a solid piece of crystal opal, possibly from Coober Pedy mine, based on the picture. The second may have natural black opal in them, but they look like triplets since there seems to be a quartz or glass layer on top. Black opal can be created by smoking light opal to turn it dark, or by putting a dark layer behind light opal.

1st one looks like a whole opal, 2nd one looks like a doublet (thin opal at the base glued to a clear material (plastic or glass or quartz) on top.. :)

Wow thanks for such a quick response!

I ended up buying them as souvenirs and never ended up wearing them. I just don't think I'm that fond of opals. Are they worth anything you think? Maybe I should consider selling them along with some of the extras in my jewellery box. Would love your suggestions

Do you have a niece or younger sister who would enjoy the pieces?

Unfortunately no but maybe I could give them to a friends daughter. Thanks for the suggestion.... yeah I guess they are somewhat small for adults.

Oh, I don't think they are small, I just know that young girls really like silver jewelry. They are pretty pieces and I personally think it would be more trouble than it's worth to try and sell them.

Yes I think you're right. I'll gift it :)

How about this ring... are these real opals? It's got a real sparkle

Yes but o believe they are ‘lab grown’ opals. They are really pretty though!
