would you pick a D IF or a deep yellow IF stone ?

yellowish diamonds are much more common than white diamonds with a very large amount of them being crushed for use as industrial abrasives.

If someone was letting me have (free to me) my choice of a Natural D-IF 10ct diamond or a Natural Fancy Deep Yellow - IF 10ct diamond: I would chose the yellow.

Joker....

Joker....

I would do the homework to see which I could get the most money for and turn it over asap.

I dont like yellow yellow diamonds but some of the honey brown/yellow ones look pretty kewl.

Hm... "deep" yellow is a dark honney color Strm

The tops valuable is called "vivid" and has a pure yellow hue, no modifiers. Anywhere close to a serious yellow color (same that would also honor yellow sapphire -say) and you an amazing gem, born not made rare. Yellow diamonds are called "vivid" for less color than that.
I seriously doubt fancy yelloews were ever crushed - the color has been revered side-by-side with colorless throughout diamond hystory. As far as I know, the faint yellows that are not to revered today, had fared much better in the pre-standard grading past - no chance to get any crushed at all.

Here's an interesting picture showing the range of "vivid" and what cut does to color. Interesting ?

There is some oddity with these hot, hot yellows. The most valuable do not really have a name - they are just the "best" of vivid, with no special pedigree except their price!

deep yellow...
hmm Id call that brownish/yellow but it is generaly the color I like maybe a little more on the brown side tough to tell from the pic.

The others make me think yucky.

Hi Guys!

A very interesting question- but a more apt comparison would be a D IF versus a VIVID Yellow.

Deep yellow is really not nearly as desirable ( or attractive) as Vivid Yellow

D. But then I''m not a yellow fan. Maybe after I get my D I''ll get the yellow.

Dancing, I would pick yellow if the color was lemon yellow.

I like Joker''s analogy, but I''ll throw a monkey wrench into the equation and say if I was offered a 10ct D IF or a blue even if it''s 1/4ct & clarity lower than IF that''s the color of the attachment, I''ll take the blue.

Hmmmmm..that''s a tough question. Ok.. maybe not...I''ve already got my diamond so I would have to go with the yellow

But it would have to be a nice buttery color. Not too bright but noticeably yellow.

Speaking of blue diamonds....I would love, love, LOVE a light blue, pear cut diamond

I''m not crazy about the teal/blue diamonds that I see in a lot of jewelry around here. To me that just screams irradiated..even if they might not be.
Still...no thanks.

Someday, I would like a fancy yellow diamond ring, flanked by F-G diamonds. Once, on 47th St., I saw a 3 ct fancy yellow MQ with F trills and I loved it.

I was going to post its picture here but it looks like he sold it.

Interesting question. Are yellow diamonds rarer than white, specifically D color, colorless? It depends on what you mean by yellow. Fancy Vivid Yellow is the top GIA grade for yellow diamonds. D is the highest GIA grade for colorless diamonds.

However, when it comes to Fancy Vivid Yellow there is a range of tones. . GIA designed a system of grading colorless diamonds that had twenty four seperate categories, D-Z. The GIA system for grading fancy yellows has only four categories (fancy light-fancy vivid) forget fancy deep. Thus, there are high vivids and low vivids and those in between.

So to attempt to level the playing field lets discuss the rarity of D-color colorless diamonds to the best of the vivids. On that basis, the vivid yellow is rarer than the D.

Yesterday I looked at a 4.26 emerald cut fancy vivid yellow. I am sourcing this for a client. It is a top vivid yellow and because it is an emerald cut it sells for a price in the low six figures per carat. This is because an emerald cut will not pump up the yellow hue in a diamond. I also showed the client a radiant cut that looks almost identical face up for half the price. The price differential is based solely on rarity. An emerald cut FVY will sell for twice the price of a Radiant FVY.

Interesting, no?

I agree with strmrdr, this is a totally cool diamond. I have an excellent 2.05 vs2 G sitting in my drawer, wanna swap?
Before I found the colored stones I thought diamonds were end all be all. I still love my diamond, but I can''t stay away from the honeys and the champagnes and now this georgeous brown.

Latching on to sagebrush''s post: Without the radiant cut, what do you have?
