So on my quest to get myself a lovely birthstone necklace, I've discovered I like asscher cut gemestones. I saw a saphire asscher and it was just to die for! So, for those who know lots about gemstones and best cuts, is this a bad idea, or does it not matter so much? Is there a best cut for Amethyst, or a best kind (origin)? I know concave faceting is important for a beautiful gem as well, but I can't find one in an asscher. Anyone know where I can locate one? I'm not looking for anything huge, maybe 2 -3 cts total?

Any other info that you could share would be wonderful as well!

Check this one out, Nebe. I have the Green Quartz version and its very comfy and substantial looking. There's a thread around here somewhere.

ETA: ooops. just saw "necklace" ... NM!

Deco, the link doesn''t work! Even if it''s not a necklace, I could still just pull the stone out and have it reset. Thanks for trying to help though darlin!

Oh, it''s one of my favs!! I had it in my hand for a few short days. Unfortunately, a ring setting was going to be WAY out of budget for me.

HERE is my thread and my own pics of the beautiful little dazzler.

Hey- I was home sick today and found this if you''re still looking. The setting is ugly, but the stone looked good on TV (and most of them did NOT)

I''m sorry to hear that you''re sick! I hope you feel better soon

Thank you for thinking of me, but I''m looking for something much darker (like the color of the one something shiny posted, I may actually buy that stone... I''m debating) than the one pictured. If you see anything else, let me know!

Regarding origin, Amethyst is found world-wide and was not for its widespread availability, amethyst would be very expensive. Amethysts from different regions differ in quality and experts tend to identify the origin of a stone from its quality. The most celebrated quality of amethyst comes from Africa. These gems from Africa are prized for their deep, velvety violet color and outstanding clarity. Another popular source of amethyst is Brazil. The gems from Brazil have a pale to medium lilac hue with great transparency.

Wow I totally missed your post. Thank you so much for the info. I''ve kinda set myself up for a 4 peaks so far. I want to view and asscher before purchasing just incase I don''t like the cut after all. I really hope I can find a pretty one though! Thanks again for the help!

Nebe, have you talked to Jeff White or anyone about having one cut? I don't think the rough is terriblyexpensive and Jeff's listed cutting fees are reasonable/stupid cheap for non-custom cuts.

just a thought...

ETA: Starter stone? The price is certainly right. Or this one?
