I'm new here, but have been shopping for an e-ring upgrade for a while now. The problem is that I love fishtail prongs on a center stone, but I also love the square step cut. I've only ever seen round stones set in the fishtails. Is it possible to put an asscher-esque cut center stone into fishtail prongs, or do I have to choose one or the other? Thanks.

hmmm... having trouble visualizing that. I think the asscher in its octagon shape, is unique in its own right. Putting fishtail prongs that sort of 'square' it off--- isn't that kind of counter productive? As I said, I can't wrap my head around that and get a mental picture. Have you found anything similar when searching?

If you are looking for a delicate detail, what about something under the mounting, open work or a surprise diamond? Just throwing that out as an detail suggestion, if fishtail prongs aren't the way to go.

Thanks... no, I haven't found anything like that in my searching. I suspect you're right that they are not really compatible, or at least that the fishtails would compromise the beauty of the shape of the asscher. I found a fishtail prong mounting at a local jeweler that I just adore, with a few tiny diamonds on the shank and delicate engraving. If I go with the step cut, I'll have to start all over on the mounting! And, ahem, I also have the thought that I might want a sapphire for a center stone, and that might not work with the fishtail prongs, either. Too many decisions!

I think the sapphire would work - if it is not a square/asscher shape. What shape sapphire are you considering? round or oval - that would work!

But that's quite the different look - sapphire vs. asscher!! ;))

Junebug--Yes! Those are exactly the prongs I was thinking of. So it has been done. Thanks so much for the visual. That will help a lot in making this decision. And that ring is actually very similar to the one I saw IRL, which is made from an antique molding.

Enerchi--You're right, I'm in love with two totally different looks. Well... I suppose both the fishtail prongs and the asscher cut are vintage-y, just not often seen together. Maybe an asscher cut sapphire? Ha! Or, I agree, a round sapphire might look great with the fishtail prongs.

Great! I'm glad I could help someone for once! How funny that I happened to be browsing around on that site, and actually stopped and admired the ring, then I log on and see your post!

I actually think it's a very pretty look - if you click on the link and scroll down a bit, you'll see a few other shots of this ring.

I actually have a sapphire in fishtail prongs! Will post a pic when I get he ....

HOME. When I get HOME. Stupid autocorrect .....

Ooh, that would be great, Circe, thanks!

No problem! Here you go - just a quick couple of snaps. I need to do a proper photoshoot with this thing!

Wow, that's gorgeous! I really like how the prongs contrast with and set off the blue. (And I love the style of the mount in general!) Thanks, Circe. I'm really leaning toward a sapphire with the fishtail prongs.

Circe, your sapphire ring is to die for, absolutely gorgeous!!

jd, I was looking around on the internet (no wonder my house is such a mess :cheeky: ) and found a pic of this ring so I just thought I'd post it so you can see another example of fishtail prongs.

Sorry for the threadjack, but ooh Circe, where did you get that beauty??

Thanks, Junebug. I definitely like the sapphire with the fishtails. Love the contrast between the color of the stone and the prongs!
