Hello Aussie PSers!

Quick question about diamond jewelry - I am curious for those of you with larger stones if you feel comfortable wearing them out and about daily? Do you practice any safety precautions or have experiences with wearing expensive pieces? Do you insure your higher end pieces or live and let live? If you worked for a government funded agency, would you still wear those pieces?

What do you define as large? Not sure if mine would match / if I’m allowed to post as mine is 2.3ct lab marquise. I work in a bank branch and not one day goes by without someone commenting on my ring. But it is never negative or nasty - other then I woman who said oh I have a larger one LOL (actually there was 2 - that woman and my older sister who said the same). But that was water off a duck’s proverbial.

One customer told me this week that if someone came in to rob the branch they’d end up robbing me instead which I thought was hilarious.

Australia is definitely not used to massively large stones - not for the vast majority of people. Celebrities, sure but day to day people I think would be a bit agoggle at a huge stone IMO. It comes down to personal preference. 2.3 was my sweet spot size wise as I have a 4.5 finger.

Thank you @HGar. A 2.3ct lab

Hi Hgar. You have a stunning marquise which has a lot of presence. Wondering how inner city living, getting off and on trams / trains, walking to and from your car in shopping centres might be fair. I'm noticing there is a lot more crime in Australia than there was a few years ago. I guess there would be the same concerns for anyone sporting a large stone in metropolitan cities.

I work in a public health service and have a 3.6ct and a 5.68ct old mine cut. They never get any attention but when I wear my 1ct ish sapphire ring with a halo everyone starts talking. To be honest I don't think the vast majority of people are into jewellery and hence wouldn't really notice.

I'm currently on leave but still wear my ring everywhere and really haven't felt unsafe. The only time I've felt wary is when I'm at the front yard trying to video my rings lol.

Hi @maryjane04 thank you for responding. Love your rings ❤️. It’s interesting how people respond to your sapphire.

I haven’t felt unsafe. My work is situated next door to a methadone clinic and we have a large percentage of newly released prisoners coming in to open accounts (courthouse is just up the road). If I am bargaining for a discount on anything I do swivel it under my finger so as not to raise eyebrows but it’s been two years and haven’t had any issues.

The USA is definitely more accustomed to LARGE stones. I think Australia will always lag a bit but you should be fine - I noticed a large stone on a fairly young Service NSW staff member the other week - I complimented her as it was a gorgeous engagement / wedding ring set.

Thank you so much. I think coloured stones attract more attention because they're different. Large stones especially with lab diamonds aren't uncommon anymore. In my sister's circle of 20-30yo most of them got engaged with lab diamonds but I think the older folk have yet to embrace them. Mostly people will probably just think it's moissanite or cz anyway.

P.s lol when I opened your thread the first time I thought you were going to organise an Australia GTG for us meet and oogle each other's rocks haha.

Haha I do the same thing too when I'm going somewhere to get a service/quote. I don't want to be ripped off because of my jewellery.

And I'm like you too, anything shiny attracts my attention and would always compliment others on their jewellery lol. Maybe we're the only ones that really notice.

I'm seriously thinking of buying lab. I'm guessing an Australian GTG is long overdue :P2

Lol I just bought my dad a 4.2ct lab mrb hahaha (it was such a good deal). Even men can have big rocks too! And yes I really hope for an Aussie GTG cause I don't have many in real life I can share my love for jewellery with.

@ruffrock i don’t have a large diamond but do have higher end jewellery. I feel completely safe and don’t think there has been an increase in crime…unless if you are maybe in Melbourne (but that might be a press beat up).

Hahaha I'm from Melbourne so I feel I should weigh in. I think from what I've seen in and around my suburbs that you're more likely to have your car stolen than to have your jewellery stolen. So it's probably safer wearing big rocks than drive certain cars (the ones frequently being targeted are sports cars and commodores from what I've heard).

My EC engagement ring is 4.5 carats and apparently no one thinks it real because it isn’t round and diamonds don’t come that big (or so I was informed).
And no, it wasn’t from Temu. Geez.
I’m now rocking a 5.5 carat lab diamond as well everywhere and anywhere and I’ve never felt uncomfortable or threatened. Though I’m old now and don’t give too hoots about what other people think. I catch public transport and walk around the inner west of Sydney no worries.
Honestly, there is so much “alternative” diamonds about that if the gem is big everyone thinks it’s costume.
Lots of gold chains might be more of a target I think but I’m not walking dark alleys or seedy parts of town to test that theory.
