I'm in Calgary and I'm seeing quite a few of my friends and colleagues with 1-2ct solitares in the mid 20-40 age range. The 40-65 age range is interesting though, I see many .25-.50ct rings that they got when they first got married and they have no desire to change/upgrade them. Then the other 40+ crowd have HUGE upgrades.

I say you take the average rent in the area and divide by 1000 and you get the average size that people are wearing.

600 rent = 0.6 carat
800 rent = 0.8 carat
1000 rent = 1.0 carat
1500 rent = 1.5 carat
2000 rent = 2.0 carat

Interesting thought! Our rent was $1700 at the time we got engaged, so my 1.6 ct was pretty close. Too bad I didn't get to upgrade when we moved to a bigger place, that was $3000

Here in Brooklyn, it's really hard to estimate the average, things vary so much even among different neighborhoods. I think even in my very affluent neighborhood though, the average is definitely smaller than in Manhattan, probably somewhere between 1.5 and 2cts but there are plenty of smaller and larger stones as well. I work in a hospital in Brooklyn and my ring gets so much attention, I hardly wear it. A good friend of mine, who's a physician in Manhattan has mentioned that her stone (2.5 cts) is much smaller than those of most of her patients.

I'd love to sit in THAT waiting room!

I live in San Fernando Valley, Cal, and the average size I see is .71 to 1.25. (I say .71 because alot of people like to aim for about a 3/4ct. size stone and end up with just slightly under) I had a .72 at one time.

ROFLMAO. My husband owes me another carat in size. We pay 2100 and my diamond is ONLY (haha) 1.09 carats! Granted when we got engaged, years ago, it was about 1000 in rent so... maybe for the time we bought he was right on the budgeting. CedarRapids, I fear you've given yet another argument to the upgraders in the bunch!

I think the average where we live is about .5-1 ct. Many of my friends have smaller rings, although my sister's crowd is from the nearest city and they all have bigger rocks..my sister's 1.4 is rather small compared to some of them.
My fiance is from Sweden, where he explains engaged couples wear gold bands together announcing their engagement, and women may wear a diamond as a wedding band, but its usually smallish. He thought 1 ct was absolutely huge, while I thought I wanted something closer to 1.5 would be perfect....and we settled on 1.2 with sidestones. Most of the rings of the population I work with are about.5..and the rents and homes where we live are high, but our cost of living is high too, so I dont believe the rents thing..most people I know pay out their ear on housing, which may contribute to the less disposable income.

i live in vancouver and the overall average ring i see around here is about a .4-.5 rb solitaire. i also see a lot of women wearing bands alone.

definitely when we cross the border into the states, the carat weight increases.

Well, If I average the various places my GF and have lived before meeting each other, I calculate the carat size I ended up buying. And heck, I'm even 0.02 higher!

I live in an area where the least you can spend on a descent property is:
studio flat rents for £650 ($1,000),
a one bedroom for £800 ($1,300),
a two bedroom for £1,100 ($1,775),
a three bedroom for £1,400 ($2,275)

Of course, you can pay more, but having just rented two places back to back this is what I think the lowest you can pay for an acceptable property is (acceptable being dated furnishing, but clean).

I live in a one-bedroom flat so I should be rocking a 1.3 carat. I have a lovely 0.47 centre, 0.71 ctw.

I live on Chicago's North Shore and the rings here vary, of course. I see a lot of big bling around here, especially 3 ct+ fancies. I'd say the young moms in the area most often sport 1.5 to 2.5 ct center stones.

However, there's a lot of old money around here, too, and I think that set tends to wear much more modest bling on a day-to-day basis. That doesn't mean you can't spot some WHOPPERS at big events, though. Amazing blingwatching, those events.

I live in the Metro DC area, and I think rings vary a lot based on profession/salary and age of marriage. Among those who got married 30+: physicians and lawyers, you'll see 1.5-2 carats, and those with other graduate degrees are usually 0.75-1 carat. For those who got married earlier, 0.5-1 carat tops.

.25-75 carat is the average
older women yellow gold solitaires, younger women, white gold often princess cut, with sidestones of some sort.
Everybody does aspire to 1 carat, but it is rare and over 1 carat just about unheard of.

I go to NYC very often, Brooklyn and Manhattan, including some very swank areas and do not see these large, large stones I'm always hearing about. The NY doctors/lawyers in my family including the younger set, under 30 years old, have 1.3-1.5 carat solitaires, I am sure it is not more than this and they have the biggest stones of anyone I know (except one lady whose husband gave her a two carat to make up for losing their house--????? I don't quite understand how this works, but it is a definitely a two carat diamond--much too ugly to be a cz. Though now they do have a house again.)

I go often to Palm Beach where more family lives and also to New England where my university is; new england is old money and I don't see anything sizable ever there, Palm Beach is just money, I don't know whether old or new but I also don't see large diamonds there. My mom's neighborhood is on a golf course, which costs more than most people's houses just to be a member,nearby are the polo fields and the yachts clubs and those with private airstrips on their property. I don't see any big diamonds. I mean, seriously, the average is maybe .5 carat, not much different from my country neighborhood. .Perhaps diamonds get in the way when you are steering your yacht or riding your horse? Or it is just, as the woman I know said to me this summer , "I dont' need anyone thinking we are rich, that means nothing but trouble."'
