I have a sweet little axinite that is 5.5x4.5mm. my first thought is a rose gold bezel ring but I am not sure that is a great idea since the stone is softish. Finding them is not super easy so I do not want to scratch it up. At the same time I am not jazzed on a necklace. Maybe a brooch, or a more protected ring setting? Maybe the axinite with little Paraiba tourmalines on the sides?

It's very beautiful with such a lovely play of light and delicate color. I can imagine small lavender or even violet sides as well as I can imagine paraibas. I think a pendant would be lovely, as well as a ring...but another option could be in the center of a simple, thin cuff bracelet, bezel set that way you get to see it but it might not get knocked as frequently.

I'm surprised by how much I actually like the stone. Normally I'm not a fan of things that change color, with the exception of Star Stones, but it is pretty to see it shift from brown to red to green.

I do like your idea of using violet stones.

Nice color for an axinite.

I imagine it in rose gold with 2 small diamond side stones. :)

So you think less is more. I kind of like the idea to maybe set it with asymmetrical diamonds.

I think diamonds would help enhance whatever the axinite decides to do regarding color change.

So the total opposite of diamonds. I am also playing with the idea of an asymmetrical cluster. This might actually be a terrible idea and I will not be offered.IMG_20170927_223413.jpg

No. It is such a gorgeous stone that I think it should be the one and only and maybe with a bezel? I think it was david klass who IG recently showed a bezel pendant watermelon tourmaline....

Wow! What a stunning setting and tourmaline.
I am asking lots of questions, I know. I am just thinking it all out. What about something like this as a ring or a necklace?

I really like this idea, Vesper.

I want something totally different from anything I own!

Does anyone have an axinite? How do they hold up? Any pictures? I can't find much on ol' Google.

When the stone is beautiful on it's own, I usually set it without much in it, thus I imagined it with a couple of small diamonds to glam the stone a bit.

I don't have an axinite because most are not a nice color. Yours is more lively than the usual. :)

So I do not intend this as a jerk question (famous last words) I have read this stone is uncommon, but I have been able to find some for low prices. So is it safe to say that it is uncommon but not exactly valuable... or maybe a better word is expensive to replace? I ask became someone gave me this stone not knowing what it is and I want to extend them the option of taking it back.

Axinite is a rare mineral, rarer still in cut form. You are right. Many rare minerals, far rarer than rubies, and sapphires, and spinels are not highly priced because demand has to contribute to the price factor. It's a specialty niche for collectors. Many rare stones are beautiful yet unheard of.

Thank you @Seaglow! I have tried reading up on it and found what it goes for per carat and it was low... but then I read it was uncommon. And price and scarcity do not always go hand in hand (thank you economics 101.) I will extend the offer for her to have it back again just to be on the safe side.
