We had so much fun ring shopping tonight! We found that we really like the five-stone look. So, I''m coming to ask you smart ladies---if I decide to buy something like this from an online vender instead of the mall stores, where should I start? Do you think I''d get a better deal?

(We were looking at a total carat weight of .5, white gold)

bluenile.com has some nice five stone rings...reasonable cost. check it out and congrats!

Ravengirl, that's lovely! Do you have an idea of what the budget will be? I'm sure that people will be able to give you some terrific options with nicer stones than the mall stores have, but it would be helpful to know how much you want to spend. I'm so glad you found a style you like!

ETA: if these links work, they might be something to look at,

yay-ring shopping is so exciting!!
You''d probably be better posting your question on rockytalk and they''d be able to help you there, although whiteflash seems to be a great online site.

Yep definitely head over to rocky talk I know someone recently had a five stone made or is in the process of making one I think it is through Whiteflash.

Without a doubt you will more then likely get a much better diamond online for much if not the less cost then in a mall store.

Well, we''d like to keep it below or around $1000. Like I mentioned before, the ones we liked best had 5 stones, total carat weight of .5. One store had a ring for $800, but the stone quality was only ok. The other store had all ideal cut stones, price $1300--but they seemed willing to haggle, and they have sales a few times a year that they were advertising to us. So, I felt like we might be able to get that ring for less than $1300.

Both rings had decent color (H-I, I think---fine for me) and were S1 or S2.

Hey, I know it migh sound crazy, but I''m a regular shopper of Overstock.com and I incidentally noticed they sell diamonds... Now, I''ve purchased some jewerly from them, like silver, or a gold chain (not diamonds), and never had a problem. The people leaving reviews in general seem to be pleased with the relation between price and quality...
For instance: http://www.overstock.com/Jewelry-Watches/14k-Yellow-Gold-1-2ct-TDW-Diamond-Anniversary-Band/2579617/product.html
It is half a carat, it is a five stone, and the diamonds you get are between SI2 and I1, color H-I for $399.
I know you are planning on upgrading later (I''ve been reading other posts), and you don''t have much money now, so maybe this would be a good deal... I personally think that looking for certifications in smaller diamonds is kind of a waste, specially when you''re trying to save money.

Good luck!

HI:

Here is a suggestion. The fine quality stones will sparkle +++++++++!

There are white gold .25 & .30 ctw versions that are within your budget.

cheers--Sharon

Wow, I whole carat! Interesting....

I am a little worried about cut though. My BF and I felt like we could really tell the difference between the ring that had ideal cut stones, and the other ring we looked at. At this second store, the lady didn''t even know what ideal cut was! I asked about the cut of the ring, and she said "Uh, I mean, they''re round cut."

Ok! Of course cut is important, after all is that what mostly determines how sparkly the stone appears... Besides, is not that the rings I showed are necessarily badly cut, is only that they don''t specify.
That''s why I think when we''re talking smaller diamonds, you could choose the one that sparkles the most, even if you don''t know the cut. I suppose the sparkle-factor is why you ''could tell the difference''... that means you can tell the difference even if no one tells you about cut, right??

So, happy hunt!!
