Bad craftsmanship- what would you do?

Hi all,

What would you do if you received this work?

I recently received my upgrade stone (which I absolutely love!) and took it to our local jeweler to be set. I brought along my setting from the previous diamond on the off chance they would reuse it. I asked if that would be ok but told them I was open to purchasing a brand new setting from them if it wasn't a good idea to use the old one. Would not have been a big deal!

This is what I got back. They refused a refund and the owner was just plain rude when I asked for at least the setting fee/labor to be refunded. Started going off about how I didn't even purchase the diamond from them and just spouting off irrelevant nasty comments. Lesson learned. Super disappointed because we'd been going to them for years.

The ring is set too high, the prongs are uneven, the head looks askew to me and they claimed they replaced the basket and head but it is SO messy and shoddy looking to me. They refused to give me the old head back and I don't trust them to work on the ring again due to some comments the owner made on the phone. I was in four separate times this week trying to work with them.

If you are certain your diamond is unharmed - I’d walk away and start over fresh with someone else.
you really want them to work on it again, after those convo’s? Trust is gone.
Taking them to small claims to get reimbursed - how much in time and effort and fees will that run you, even if you ‘win’?

it’s disappointing, I feel for you.

it almost seems there’s something missing that happened between you dropping it off and you picking it up.
You diving into that, to set things ‘right’ is more of a principle thing than monetary thing though, I feel.

Oh, no I am absolutely never going back to them. I'm completely shocked at the bad work and being berated by their owner. I have already consulted with a different local jeweler who is happy to replace the head or set the diamond in a brand new setting. Expensive lesson learned!

I had asked for a full refund and then a partial refund (just for the labor/setting fee!) and they refused saying they should have charged me more in the first place (which is laughable.)

I disputed the charge with my cc company and am moving on. I guess I'm just curious as to what others would do in this situation.

Oh, how disappointing for you :( I remember you were upgrading to a 2 carat EC, is that the new stone?

I would absolutely walk away and post honest reviews of your experience with the jeweller here and online. I think disputing the charge with your cc company was a good idea too.

Personally I would go for a whole new setting with the new jeweller. I don't think replacing heads works unless it's a basic peg setting.

Hi! Yes it is the new stone! :) I will share pictures with you when it's in a setting I'm happy with. I love your EC so much!

Thank you for weighing in and I completely agree- I'm going to just start over with a brand new setting and enjoy my fresh ring worry-free.

Sorry to hear this is happening. One thing is clear, you are disappointed with the work and the vendor did not try to resolve but instead attacked you.

IMO, that is a lose-lose situation. Walk away. Dispute the charge and then provide honest feedback about them and the way they responded.

I read something today that resonated in so many facets of my own life. Maybe it will help you or maybe you will think I’m just being crazy.

Anger is the “gift” we provide ourselves for the inappropriate actions of others.

While it would be easy to be angry and spend your time working this out, sometimes it’s okay to just not accept a “gift” in the first place.

Wishing you well in this journey!

Wow I love that quote! Thank you for sharing that.

Since this happened I filed the dispute and just moved on. If I end up paying at least it’s only an $800 lesson and my diamond is not damaged. Small price to pay for never having to work with them again. They literally said on the phone they had done me a favor lol.

I am working with a highly recommended jeweler on a new setting and am just looking forward to my new ring!

thanks to everyone who has weighed in it’s a good sanity check and I appreciate the support.

It sounds like you did everything you could to make your expectations known. They refused to rectify the situation. You'd certainly be doing others a favor if you left them a google review and a facebook review sharing your story.
