Bad experience with eBay seller hrpawn

I just had a really upsetting interaction with an eBay seller named “hrpawn”. I’m feeling really hurt right now.

I made an offer on a vintage emerald diamond halo ring that I was thinking of repurposing for another stone (yes another emerald replacement). The ring was listed at $900 which isn’t unreasonable but I have had good luck with using the offer button in the past so I offered $700.

The offer was declined and so I politely messaged and asked if the price was negotiable or if they were only willing to accept full price. I was considering paying full price if necessary but thought I would ask first.

The message I received back was this:

“The offers you are sending are insulting and disrespecting. Let us know when you are a serious buyer with a serious offer, than we can move forward. Thank you”

I replied with:

“I only sent you one offer so maybe you are mixing me up with another buyer? $700 is a lot for me so I am honestly insulted that you said that. I have never had this experience before when purchasing on eBay.”

And then I received this response:

“There is currently a 10% Discount already on the item, along with the item already being reasonably priced. Considering another $200 off on this ring is an insult. Hope this makes you think twice about sending your offer next time.”

I’m shocked. I did reply again:

“You have an offer button. If you don’t want offers then don’t activate that function. You are the worst seller I have ever encountered on ebay. I have purchased numerous used, vintage settings using the offer option, all were accepted or countered, and I have never been accused of those offers being insulting. I will absolutely think twice before purchasing from you. There are plenty of other sellers who don’t treat buyers this way. Negotiating is part of a business transaction and many sellers do negotiate and lower prices significantly so it’s impossible to know what price a seller is willing to accept until you make an initial offer. $700 is not insulting. You are obnoxiously rude.”

The response was then:

“Please do not shop with us, we do not want customers like you. You are a disrespectful buyer that has no idea what you are doing. Take care.”

Wtf? My bp is really high right now. That sucked.

Breathe.
So you stumbled upon an idiot on the internet. It happens.
I doubt whatever they're selling is all that unique and invaluable. You don't need their business. Let it go.

...or, if you're the other type of person, send them 50 additional offers ranging between 701 and 706 to get their bp going. But maybe from a throwaway account, in case ebay bans for such things.

Lol. Thanks for the laugh. I just hate conflict and I have had so many positive experiences that I wasn’t expecting that at all! I have been so pleasantly surprised at having my offers accepted that I sometimes wished I offered less. But I was being reasonable.

eBay limits offers to 6 I think but that’s a tempting idea. I was also tempted to buy the ring at full price and then leave negative feedback.

Too bad this didn’t work out though because I have a couple of stones that would have fit perfectly and it hasn’t been easy to find settings for odd shaped stones. But it is still more than I was hoping to pay because the size is really small so the cost to up size it and replace the stone would be a lot.

700 is not insulting and if they didn’t want offers they should not make it an option.
What do they think people will offer? 899.99???? Do they want offers over asking price??? Get real!

I am sorry that they have no manners. Be glad they showed you how awful they are before you bought from them!

I usually try to get a discount of 25%.
You weren't even asking for that much off.
The reasonable response from the seller would have been a counter offer for $800.
That is generally how the game is played.
I'm sorry you had this in unfortunate exchange with the seller. (((Hugs)))

Right?! And rather than making a 2nd offer I reached out to them to ask whether they would even entertain another offer given they didn’t counter and given that my first offer wasn’t ‘that’ low. I wasn’t expecting to be attacked. Geez.

I have been an active ebay seller and buyer for over 20 years and that may be the rudest, most outrageous response I have heard from a seller. As either a buyer or seller, I consider 20% off quite reasonable.

You may already know this, but when a seller sets up a listing with the offer option, they can specify the lowest offer they will consider. I use that frequently to weed out true lowball offers. This seller could have easily used that feature, thereby eliminating the unpleasant exchange.

I hope you do leave a negative Yelp review!

Report that to ebay. That is unbelievably unprovoked rudeness. And thank heaven you didn't buy anything from them.

I was just going to say that. If they’re really bothered then they should do an auto decline setting!

Why have a "Best Offer" option if they are not prepared to accept offers lower than the listed price?!

Personally, I have never bothered to contact a seller who declined my offer. I just input a higher amount and hope for the best, repeat if necessary until I reached the maximum amount that I would pay for that piece.

If they still say no, then I walked away from it.

DK :))

I forgot that was the case with the offer limit so yes, another reason why I wasn’t wrong. I do feel much better knowing others agree that the behavior was over the top rude. And I did leave a Yelp review.

I’m guessing that when I sent my first email asking if he was accepting any offers, he took it as though I was giving him crap about not accepting my offer. I was polite but some people can only read things by inferring a tone that isn’t there. A couple of the other Yelp reviews mentioned his angry demeanor too.

I looked into reporting him to eBay but I didn’t see an option for reporting rude and abusive messages. I can’t believe he has 100% positive feedback on eBay.

Guess what?! I called eBay and was able to report him. She read the messages and said she couldn’t believe what she was seeing. She said they would put some kind of flag on his account and if it happens more than once he will be removed as a seller. I asked if he has any of those yet and she said yes.

Justice is served. Lol.

Yeah, I don’t know why I did that but I think I have had so many nice interactions with sellers that I thought maybe a conversation would work. Bad decision.

So i went over to ebay and found the item. When i clicked on the make an offer button

EBAY SUGGESTED OFFER PRICE WAS BETWEEN 80 and a MAX of 650.

Per ebay suggestion your bid was TOO LOW.

Way to go!

There is no reason to be rude to customers. If you want to run a legitimate business— you can act professional!

Super rude. But if I may, also kinda pointless for you to have continued engaging after the first rude response - people like that never get better on the second or third exchange. Spare your blood pressure next time and just walk away at the first sign of WTF, whatever it is is never worth it ::)

Oh dear... looks like you happened to stumble across a really lousy seller... the kind of seller that gives other ebayers a bad name. I'm sorry for the upsetting experience. As a long-time ebay seller myself (2003), I can tell you that offering $700 for an item listed for $900 is totally within the parameters of good ebay etiquette, even if there is no "best offer" option on the listing. That's about 20% off... a healthy discount, yes, but not outrageous. Sellers routinely inflate their listed prices to accommodate for this. Buyers submit offers to me all the time via messages (I don't even have a "best offer" option on my listings). If it's in the ballpark of what I want, I accept. If not, I politely decline or counteroffer. No need to take it personally or become nasty. He/she could have used it as a jumping off point for negotiating, rather than "throw the baby out with the bathwater." Just know that if the seller responds to potential customers in this fashion, his/her business is going nowhere fast. That was NOT an insulting offer. I have an item listed for over $10k. I had an offer for $2k. Now that's insulting! And I still responded pleasantly!!

Hello @tkyasx78 - I'm confused by this... OP's offer was $700. What am I missing (not being snide... truly wanting to know)? Plus, that is stating what "similar" items sold for. It's an automated system. They have no idea what any particular item is worth or what a seller is willing to take or how much they've marked it up. I always take those generated suggestions with a grain of salt. That being said, according to ebay, OP would have been justified offering $80!

I wrote it wrong!

It was too HIGH!

My bad ! Please forgive my previous error.

Items that are comparable are selling up to the 650
700 is more than generous.

I think they meant too high but I didn’t notice the range anyway! Good to know my offer is reasonable. I sure thought so!

I agree that I shouldn’t have engaged but I was so flustered that I got sucked in and at first I truly thought maybe he had received other offers that were lower and was confusing me with someone else. I was kind of expediting him to say “sorry about that!”

I never trust my math skills, so I just assumed I was having a senior moment! Thank you for clarifying, my friend!!
