Bad Parenting

A woman in CT called the fire dept becuase she had accidently locked her 3month old in her car.

She called 911 but wouldnt let the Fire Deptarment break the window. After ten minutes of arguing she left to go and get a spare set of keys. When she left the Firemen broke the window....what is wrong with people.

She obviously was more concerned about her car than the fact that it''s probably 120 degrees in teh car...

Thank goodness I left the window rolled down about an inch which was enough to unlock the door with a stick.

If that had been my child I would have broken the window myself. A window can always be replaced.

The firemen didnt say why she wouldnt let them brake any of her windows...but they sounded shall we say peeved.

I cant imagine arguing for 10 mintues and then leaving to get keys. Babies die of heat in this weather.

The police are arresting her for child neglect. It was unclear as to if it was becuase she locked her keys and her child in the car or if it was becuase she would not let the FD do its job. I will let you know when the radio updates....

I''m absolutely horrifed by this story! The baby was so young too....they definitely need to check the sanity of this woman.

My Lexus was about 2 months old when I accidently locked my 3 year old and his friend in it (this was on their field trip, how sad). I got out of the car without my keys and purse, and for some reason every door was locked! A ton of moms and dads that accompanied us to the field trip were helping me out. Some tried to show the 2 preschoolers how to undo their carseats to open the door, others let me borrow their cell phones to call AAA, while others called the fire department and I just wanted to look for the biggest brick possible to shatter my window. Luckily it wasn''t that hot that day, about 70 degrees, but I kept thinking of the poor boys INSIDE, it must have been 80-90 degrees! AAA responded quickly, and I didn''t have to shatter my window, but while the AAA guy was fiddling around with a slim jim and hanger (the seal around the window was tight). I kept telling him that damaging the seal was okay, shattering th window was okay too.

Im not going to give details but almost all fire departments have a glass breaker in every truck that just causes the window to break apart and fall strait down.
Works on all car windows except for the windshield.
As far as that goes all the cops around here have one also in their first responder kit.
It was not like they are going to hit it with an axe.

That lady needs to be put in stocks on a busy intersection with a barrel of rotton fruit nearby and sign saying what she did.

Man that pisses me off.
Some idiot judge will give her a slap on the wrist and return her kid to her.

yeah don't they have those things you can buy on sharper image too where it taps the glass and it shatters and falls down, it's supposed to be safety driven to keep in your car in case of a drowning or emergency, i would think that's what the fire dept would use or something similar.

I can imagine not wanting to break the window if the glass would get on the child, but when it's that hot out, it doesn't matter! I would be kicking down the window myself if my child was stuck in a car that was probably 120+ degrees inside! That pisses me off so badly how some parents take care of their kids.

I was at Costco one time and was approaching my car when I noticed the car behind me was loading all their groceries into it. The mom and dad sat in the front with 3 other children in the back. The mom was sitting in shotgun with her fourth child! Just holding the child! I was horrified and stormed up the their window and knocked on it. The lady rolled down her window and I said, "you need to put that child in a car seat in the back! You can't just hold her like that in the front!" One of the daughters in the back seat came out and started cursing at me to mind my own business. She seemed about 14-15 years old. I was horrified that the parents would let her talk to someone like that! The dad quickly told the daughter to get back and in the car and drove off. I couldn't get the license plate number but I noted down the type and color of vehicle and watched them drive off and make a right turn. I should've called the cops and told them the direction their vehicle was headed, but I didn't because I figured by the time they get down here, they would've been long gone.

I just can't believe people neglect their own children, their own blood that way!!

If I ever come across something like that again, I will call the police in a heartbeat and this time I will have the license plate number with the full description of the vehicle.

I''ve been told that if you write down all the vehicle info and call the police that they will send a letter to the registered owner reminding them to buckle their kids in. This is about the most that can be done. . .I''ve called on drivers before because I see this happening all the time. . .a young kid bouncing around in the back seat while the mom is driving down the road talking on her cell phone & smoking a ciggarette, and this really upsets me.

As far as breaking a window to get your baby out of the car before it cooks to death is a given. What kind of idiot would let their baby sit there like that?

me too. Absolutely no way i'm leaving my kids locked in a hot car. A 4 year old in my area locked himself in his family's van, one with the auto doors so all he had to do was get in and press the button. well, he couldn't get it open. It took his family only seconds to realize he was missing and started hunting. Well they found him only minutes later but his temp had spiked up to 104 degrees. It took the hospital over an hour to get his temp back to normal. He's alright but things like hyperthermia can happen so quick, especially in kids.

As far as glass getting on/hurting my child from breaking a window, i think i would risk the couple of stiches, if any!

As for the buckling kids up... i know anything can happen at anytime, even in a parking lot (and I ALWAYS have my seat belt on--i fell naked without it!), but maybe they were just moving their car closer to another store. But that is no excuse for the way the one child responded and the lack of response from the parents. Just playing devils advocate.

When i was yonger i NEVER wore my seat belt... no one ever made me! I even sat in the front seat! I can remember McDonalds did like a buckle-up campaign and had stickers that said something like, "i buckle-up!". Well, i wanted to wear them, but my grandparents wouldnt let me because they said i didnt wear my seat belt so it would be lying... but they never made me!

In my area there has been a strange rash of mothers putting children in the trunk of their cars...

I live in CT and saw the news broadcast last night. I guess the car was an Audi A4, an older model. The woman called 911 and told them that she lived three minutes away from the parking lot (Homegoods) and that they didn''t need to break the window. The 911 operator told her not to be ridiculous. When they arrived on the scene, she was gone! She had went home to get the car keys. At that point, the child had been in the car for 15 minutes, and the child had been sweating heavily. The child then passed out and that is when they broke the window. They put the child in the back of a air conditioned cop car, and when the mother returned, they arrested her and towed the car. She was not arrested for locking her child in the car because that was an obvious mistake, but she was arrested for leaving her child and going home to get her car keys.

Just goes to show that just because your reproductive organs work doesn''t necessarily mean you should use them. I find it ironic that in order to adopt, prospective parents undergo psychological exams, financial scrutiny and other rigorous checks into their backgrounds to test their fitness as parents, but those who are capable of producing their own children are free to do so with much more flexibility and freedom.

This is a sad story. I went to Harrahs Casino in St Louis with my dh on Christmas day and it was freezing outside and when I parked and got out of my car three tiny children were in the backseat of a parked car beside mine all alone! I knocked on the window and asked about their parents and they were in elementary school and one not even in school, they were crying. My husband felt of the hood and it was cold. They had been there who knows how long. I called the security and they took the children in to the casino and got them food while they searched for their parents. This was very sad for me. I rarely go and their parent must of been a addict to leave tiny kids on Christmas in a cold car in St Louis!! Not too safe!

We love to go to Disneyland and have annual passes. Thank goodness as a mandated reporter, we are not required to report child abuse/neglect during our "off" time, or I''d never be able to go to Disneyland or the beach!!!

I remember one time a family of 3 got split up on the Matterhorn. The mother was in one car, while a child of about 3 or 4 and her father left back on the platform for the next car. As the mother''s car went into the mountain, she waved goodbye to her daughter, the father started shouting to the little girl, "Look!! The Mountain is eating your mother!!!"

...

The little girl was beside herself and hysterically crying!! When it was her turn to get on, she wouldn''t do it!! She was terrified!!! To boot, you can hear the "Bigfoot" roaring inside the mountain, so is really could sound like the people are getting eaten by a YETI!!!

I was SO furious and if that father was in arms reach of me, I might have strangled him...I felt SO awful for that little girl...

Why do parents have to be THAT dumb?!?!?!?!

That whole story sounds so odd though, I mean what is the Mom supposed to do after calling 911? Would be waiting for the paramedics/fire dept right? So if she left to go home (3 minutes?) and get the keys maybe she was figuring either she''d get back first or the FD would and either way she or the FD would get the child out. So I don''t know why they would arrest her for just leaving the scene to get the keys...what could she have done if she stayed?

Protect her baby from a good samaritan who happened to wander by and felt the need to rescue an apparently abandoned baby.....or worse yet, from the random attention of some sicko who was in the wrong place at the wrong time?

Perhaps not a comparable situation, but it came to mind.

Imagine the woman was involved in an accident; she is uninjured, the other person is injured (non-life threatening). She is a 3 min walk away from a hospital. Should she stay at the scene or walk to the hospital for help?

Exactly you never know who will walk by and a see a child. Children that age are valuable commodities I knwo that is a miserable thing to say but there really is a black market for babies, esp white ones. I/6 couples has fertility trouble....babies are worth a ton of money. Who would want to risk their child getting sold or molested?

If she made the 911 call, maybe she didn''t just want to wait around for the cops or FD to arrive. Maybe she felt like she needed to do something to help, and if the house is 3 minutes away...I can see the impulse.

Lesser of two evils maybe, stay and wait to see how long it takes for someone to arrive or go and see if she can get the keys herself.

Just some thoughts!

Plus i have to wonder if her keys were locked in her car how did she get in her house? (If the neighboor was home, how did she know what if they hadnt been).

I see what you''re saying Mara - *I can do something helpful, why wait around doing nothing?* However, my feeling is that by staying, she can keep an eye on her 3-MONTH old baby, ask passers-by if they have a wire hanger by chance, and be there to explain the situation in full to the firemen when they arrive - how old is the child, how long has he/she been in the car, etc. I''m not a mother, but if I''d accidentally locked my baby brother in the car (when he was a baby, that is) with all the windows shut in over 70 degree heat, I''d be freaking out and jumping around, trying all the doors *one more time*, screaming for my parents and sibs. This woman does not seem overly concerned that her baby could die in that 6 minute round-trip, and likely would have if the police hadn''t arrived while she was gone and broken the window against her previous directions (Stretch4''s addition).

Exactly... this could have been an Amber Alert situation as well as a child neglect case.
