"Pennsylvania turns a small profit by disposing of these castoff items, which it accepts from security contractors at 12 airports in five states, by selling them to the highest bidders at online auction site eBay."

eww. used toothpaste. ewww!

Thanks for the read MZ. You know the article is interesting it conveys to the reader states are generating revenue off of these items. I ask myself where are the monetary gains from auctioning these items really going? There is no mention of this anywhere in the article. What programs are the gains contributed to? Personally I think it would be good if these revenues or a large percentage of them are put into non-profit help programs or aide or shelter programs. I don't necessarily disagree that some of the monies should not go to the state if indeed this is what is going on, but there are many more humanatarian efforts going on which states do not focus on.

Most of us if we travel frequently have probably been in a situation where we forget to take something out of are pocket or don't really care or pay attention to these regs and when the time comes the Speech,"Sir, you can't take that on the airplane. Is there someone you would like to call or someone like a relative you know in the terminal that could take possesion of (whatever). No one is going to miss there plane for a 40,50,60 or even $100 item.

lady, why assumed its used toothpaste? many buy small travel size tubes when they travel. i''m betting there are health and safety laws regarding selling used toothpaste type items.....

josh, i agree with you....so much so that perhaps that unused travel size toothpaste would do better donated directly to a shelter. another good use for those revenues would be toward hiring and training qualified security personnel at airports.

..You are very funny! My Wife Regina before we re-located to Haines, Alaska worked for Alaska Airlined for 8 years. Some of the stories i would hear at the end of the day would make your head spin.

I think authority is good in controlled or limited amounts...We were in the Airport in Juneau, Alaska a few years ago after my wife Regina had foot surgery. Needless to say she was in a cast and in crutches and in a lot of pain. I was very angry nopt because she was randomly selected for a full search (Which is irritating as HE** in the First Place), but the woman conducting the screening with the wand told Regina she was going to have to put her cruthes down for a moment and try to balance on one foot with her hands out at her sides while they wanded her. Not only was this embarassing, but it was an insensitive thing to do to a woman in obvious pain and not able to keep herself up without crutches. I told Regina to sit down and
aked for a supervisor, where we were able to hoble off to a private room to be screened. I am not a vulgar person, but felt my face get very hot and blood pressure really rise.

In Sitka there was another occasion where a military man in full dress uniform was asked to go behind a private curtain to get screened because they did not have a room in the Sitka Airport. A military person in full dress fatigues with medals and all. It was disheartening to watch and he was a gentleman who looked meticulous with his uniform and carried a lot of pride. It took him 20 minutes to get dressed and get everything perfect before boarding..

interestingly enough, an uncle of mine works for TSA and i asked him tonite at our family BBQ what they do with all of those items that people are now discarding, aka facial products, wines, any liquids, gels etc and he said they are trash and they throw them away and they are not supposed to be doing anything else with them aka taking them or anything. i thought that was interesting as i think that TSA probably secretly takes stuff home to their families and all that. he said no way.

interesting. I never really thought about it, I just assumed they tossed all that stuff, but I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to donate them, esp toiletries. I feel like it's such a waste if they just go down the trash!

Then again, who knows, what if one of those tubes of toothpaste turns out to actually be a bomb, and some poor homeless dude gets blown up?!!

We live in a sick, sick world.

ETA: Mara I agree w/you, I bet some TSA ppl take home stuff that's nice...
