Anyone have anything to say about either? I went to Sephora the other day since I am looking for a new makeup line since I''ve only worn the drugstore brands in my short life with makeup, not that there is anything wrong with those, I just don''t feel like the colors match as well as they could. I am Belizean American so my skin is not too light, and not too dark.

Anyway, I liked these 2 brands because they seem to be natural and good for my oily skin. My concerns:

1. Since my skin is on the darker end of the spectrum, I do have issues with hyper pigmentation, (ie dark spots) in some areas on my face. The Bare Minerals concealer is a powder as well and I just didnt feel like it concealed anything, including under eye darkness! Maybe it was the girl''s application and I could do a better job? Don''t know.

2. The Sue Devitt product that works best with my skin is the whipped foundation. It has a pudding like texture. I''m worried it will feel thick which is kinda what I''ve felt about liquid foundation and partly the reason I''m looking for a new line. This makes me lean toward Bare Minerals but I don''t want to look like a spotted leopard either.

Any thoughts feelings about either line you''d like to share? Thank you in advance for your responses!

Well, i am a HUGE bare minerals fan! I have darker skin and also tend to develop dark spots easily, and it's been a godsend. I used to break out on a regular basis, but ever since I started using the line, my breakouts have for the most part disappeared. It gives great coverage and it feels good on my skin. It sits on my skin, as opposed to sinking into it, which is better when you have sensitive skin, since you're less likely to develop a reaction. It also gives you this airbrushed look- which is different than the look you usually get from liquid foundation. It's also not 100% matte, which I love, because it looks really natural, but it's not for everyone.

In terms of the concealer, i know what you mean! I have dark under eye circles and i still use a liquid concealer in those areas. Bare minerals gives you good coverage, but the under eye area tends to be dryer and more delicate, and the Bare Minerals is a bit too powdery for that area, so I use a creamy concealer. I like Prescriptives camouflage concealer- they have a great range in colors), which is good when you have darker skin. I also like the bobbi brown concealer, which is a bit creamier.

i apply liquid concealer under my eyes first, then use bare minerals all over my face, and then take small concealer brush to cover dark spots. It actually covers really well once you learn how to use it. It's a little tricky at first, but it's really impressive. You should get the starter kit from sephora. it's a great deal and having two shades of powder to work with makes it really versatile.

I get compliments on my skin all the time. That's the biggest difference with bare minerals. People used to say "I love your makeup" and now people tell me that they love my skin, which is hilarious because it's really the makeup working it's magic.

anyhow, I hope this helps.

I too love bare minerals/BE. I do couple it with a liquid in some places...and another concealer. Remember you can build this product...so the clerk may not have been as liberal in her application as you may prefer to be. I had a clerk that applied A TON on me. It looked and felt fantastic. I don''t myself apply that much, but she was trying to convince me to have faith that the product could be just what I was looking for. I like not feeling a mask on.

I would like to address your comment about oily skin. My SIL has it too...and she wears BE. Her face is shiny. She feels the BE has a natural sheen to it to help make you skin have a glow. So it is her opinion that coupled with the natural oils in her skin BE has made her shine issue more noticeable.

I tell you that so you can prepare to have a matte choice available...they make primers and different veils to choose from. It may be the preparation of your skin before application that will be your best plan. I haven''t asked her lately what works for her...but she looks fab!

My pores are DEFINATELY smaller and less noticeable. I attribute that to the BE. I do feel more confident that my line of demarcation is no longer there...and touch up is usually only areas...as opposed to an entire face redo that I used to do when I wore Prescriptives liquid.

Try this you have nothing to loose...you can return it if it doesn''t work. But the first week you are probably not going to like it. It took me at least a week to figure out amount and technique. So don''t give up too early. Put the time into it...if it doesn''t work...go to your mousse product. But do give it a try!!

Oh I forgot to say I too have hyperpigmentation. (years of sun worship with no protection) Have you ever had a chemical peel? They will diminish them like mad! You have to keep a ton of sunscreen on though as they will return. I also us a lightening gel/cream that really helps lighten them. I don't know if your skin tone will be effected...but do make an inquiry to a Dermo.

I use Neostrada skin lightening cream. I think Sephora carries it. It is $20.

THank you so much for your responses! I think I am going to try the Bare Minerals. It's funny because a co-worker who uses it said the same thing that I probably won't like it at first but if I stick with it, I'll learn a good technique. DKS- thanks for the tip about my oily skin and I will definetly check out that skin lightening product! I recently started seeing a great aesticitian (sp?) and have started getting regular facials and micro -derm (I think my skin is improving big time, YAY!), so I'll inquire about a chemical peel. I'm gonna go with the BM and let you guys know how it goes...

Great! They give you a DVD to watch and it helps make you feel more comfortable. Glad you found a good esthetician (sp for me too). They are worth their weight in GOLD ( I am just not work my weight in spelling). Always request product samples...they have a ton and usually will provide you with enough samples to last long enough to convince you to buy a product from them. That is how I got my skin lightening stuff. But again...be forewarned...you must stay proactive...the dark spots will return without the use of a year round quaility sunscreen.

Chem peels I was referring to are Glycolic and Salicitic (sp) Acid. There are many more available...I have not tried any others. Mine prefers the chempeel to that of micro dermabrasion. But it could be that she has some sort of benefit if she moves more chem than brasions...doesn''t matter to me, as the results couldn''t be any better.

Best of luck!! Tap Swirl Buff...

I'm on the lighter shade of pale side and my skin is sensitive. I have had a lot of trouble finding something that matched my skin without irritating it.

I have not tried Sue Devitt other than the primer (not impressed with) and shadow pencil (love).

Bare Minerals is the BEST powder/foundation/concealer I've ever had!

I use the eye concealer- I have undereye darkness that sleep won't get rid of (my skin just shows the blueness underneath- also a problem with most face makeup as most things look orange-ish on me). I use their concealer in "bisque." It stays on, you don't need much, and it doesn't go on cake-y. It doesn't irritate my eyes either.

The foundation powder is great- I have absolutely no irritation! It stays on like nothing I've tried before and it looks natural (for myself I use "Fair" with neutral undertones). You do not need much- it's crazy how far a little bit goes. I also use their primer (Prime Time) and the powder goes on even nicer. The "mineral veil" softens the look and sets it. I won't change from using Bare Minerals- I've tried similar and tried completely different and tried different combinations of things and nothing comes close in comparison to what I want and have found with Bare Minerals. Also, about 99 times out of 100 I don't even need a touch up- stays looking good in heat, humidity, etc. When I first saw the infomercial I was like, "Yeah, sure it's that great." Well, it is lol.

Their shadows are really great too... they stay put and don't crease. And the blush looks great too- it was hard for me to find blushes that didn't look harsh on me- these blend in very naturally.

The only thing I really can't use is their "warmth." I'm too light- it ends up looking like dirt on me lol. It can go on naturally if I use a tiny bit mixed with the powder, but I usually don't bother.

Sera...I really need to try two things you mentioned. The primer and the concealer. I use fairly light foundation...do you use light? I am wondering which color I should go with. Is the primer a color? Or one size fits all?

I don''t have a Sephora but we have an Ulta they have mineral veil on sale now 2 for $30. Great deal if you want to stock up.

Sorry to hijack, but I think continued conversation may help Nessy make a decision.

The primer in Bisque is for light skin shades. It has a neutral undertone which doesn't cause me to look orange like "golden" undertones can. They also have the Well Rested color with yellow undertones (guess to counteract the blue of undereye circles but I haven't tried it) which brightens and is for all skin types.

The primer is a colorless gel. I have tried other primers and I ended up needing touch ups where the powder with or without the primer didn't need touch ups.

ETA: with the concealer, I believe you can use it on your face too for added coverage- but isn't for all-over. Also, like the powder, less is more. A little bit goes far with the primer too.

Sera...Thanks for your reply. If you have time can you address the following?

if you fail to use your primer is the only difference coverage and duration? Or does it change the texture or look of the foundation in anyway- I am referring to sheen.

See, Nessy may have said she has oily skin...so I am wondering if the primer shields oil...makes it less noticeable...or makes no or little difference there.

I understand the benefit to using primer. It will fill in areas and make the surface smoother...just wondering if you have noticed any other benefit?

Ok, I am getting primer tomorrow...and one of the concealers. Or attempting to. They are always out of stock. Arggghh!

I think it does help with the oiliness. The biggest "help" is that super smooth surface (though their Prime Time primer has vitamins n stuff).

For a problem with oiliness I would get a toner to follow cleansing (or like Cosmedicine's Cleanser and Toner in one that I love because it's gentle on my sensitive skin- even use it to take off eye make-up)or if something's needed all day, a mattifier that actually decreases the amount of oil produced- this stuff by Cosmedicine reallllllly works. It feels very thick going on (I bought it for our super hot and humid days here), but I didn't feel it once it was on. At first I was concerned with the thickness, but I don't think it clogs pores (I think it actually prevents that). Perhaps their spray version of this is lighter but it doesn't have an spf. I don't think it's actually touted as a primer, but it creates a smooth surface like a primer does. I would say the Prime Time gives a smoother surface and flawless application while the Medi-Matte controls oil and gives a smooth surface. Prime Time is so light, it could go on over Medi-Matte.

Thanks!!! I am primed and ready!!

I love BE, too. I've only used it for a couple years. When I was pregnant I developed awful, splotchy, dry, flaky skin. I needed a foundation, but I hated the thought of "pasting" on my face. I found the Bare Minerals line and I will never use anything else. I had to use other stuff (toners, etc) too, at first. But, after a year of Bare Minerals and possibly getting pre-pregnancy skin back, my skin looks wonderful again. I use the Bisque as concealer, and then the foundation. (I prefer the flawless face brush as opposed to the kabuki). I adore the "complexion boosters" and use them every day. They actually put some color into my pale skin without looking fake. I've also used the eye and lip products. I like them, but I wouldn't say they are any better than Almay. QVC runs some pretty good deals on BE. But, Aveda spa has great prices most of the time.

My mom has started using BE, too. She says she likes it because it's quicker than liquid makeup, and it doesn't collect in her lines.

And, for me, I use one .3 oz container of foundation (with 15 SPF) in about six months. $25 for six months of makeup is a great deal!

ETA-you'll figure out what works for your application. And be prepared, the first few times you put it on, you'll want to keep applying more. Just walk away from the mirror. Come back a few minutes later and you'll be surprised at how great it looks.

Oh, and I'm allergic to SO many makeup products! But, I've never had a reaction to anything in the BE line.

BM can look cakey and I like it but it can be tricky to apply. Sue Devitt is nice, try putting it on with a sponge or brush or mixing a bit of oil free moisturizer in to thin it a bit. You can also sort of buff it once you apply it, and it will not look heavy. I think BM can really be tough for some people to apply correctly.

Just returned with my Primer and concealer.

The primer box reads;

A preservative free foundation primer developed to combat flaky dryness, rough patches, fine lines, excess oil, enlarged pores and uneven texture.

(why do I need makeup now??? Just kidding)

This mineral infused satin finish formula glides on seamlessly with no tacky feel to provide a skin smoothing complexion. Infused with soothing plant extracts, antioxidants and nourishing vitamins C and E for added age defying power. Great for all skin types.

(woo hoo) Just about to apply. Will let you know how it works! I do think that you need to have already exfoliated to combat dry patches...etc. You don''t want to moisten those areas and then cover them up with anything. Get buffed!!

Well I got the started kit this weekend...

I''m trusting all the rave reviews you all gave and attempting to forge through this. I don''t like it right now. I''ve watched the DVD. Tried it...hate it. I can see and understand why it takes practice and a good technique, so I''m banking on that I haven''t had enough practice yet. I tried it Sat evening and Sun. evening. Haven''t braved walking out the house in it yet.

On the good side, it is very light and feels great on my skin! So I''m sticking with it for at least a week and a half. Gonna try again tonight! Wish me luck

Nessy...

Tell us what you don't like. Is it that there isn't enough coverage? Or color? We know you like the feel of it...

When I started using it I used the concealer brush and my prescriptives foundation brush. This particular brush (which was mentioned above-only it was the BE brush) is made just like the concealer brush, only larger. I am really sorry I didn't tell you that. But the buki type or fluffy one I only use when I am finished...eeeekkks. I bet you are saying, "Well you picked a fine time to tell my Lucille!!!"

So I encourage you to go slow...and use your concealer brush IF you didn't buy the other one. Just take it slow and precise. Focus on some of you problem areas first. You can walk away from mirror...(reason you do is it really does erase them...but because you are still staring at the what ever you still can see it.) Then come back and apply a little more in the other areas. Walk away. Do something else. Come back do you eyes...your lips...when you are done with everything else recheck...use little brush in some places and then get out the blush or warmth...and then follow with mineral veil. Or just more of the main stuff. Walk away.

Quit critiquing...you will soon get the hang of looking through the problems as covered instead of at them. If it makes you feel any better I was slinging things across my dresser I was so mad at it. Now I kiss it. And my skin looked like a mine field...honest. Yesterday I was at whole foods pharmacy area and I was being assisted on a product purchase...the clerk said I don't have to ask you if you drink lots of water...I can tell by looking at your flawless complexion!!! I hugged her! And I cried. It is BE and how others see you. HONEST. If I were standing infront of mirror I would have thought I wasn't done...

DKS

DON'T GIVE UP YET!!!!

Yeah, if you feel it''s not enough coverage, use the concealer brush.

If it''s going on too thick, make sure you do the "swirl, tap, buff" lol... seriously, just kinda give the powder foundation jar a shake, the swirl the brush (not concealer or kabuki) and tap it on the side- it probably will look like there is not enough on the brush, but try it that way because you do not need much at all. Just keep buffing because it does cover. I''ve been using it a couple years- I can''t remember if I had trouble at first or not. Keep trying :)

I thought I would never find something that matched my skin tone, looked natural, wasn''t irritating and stayed on all day... that sounds impossible to find that in one product, but I did with BE... it is so awesome.

YAY! I'm really starting to get the hang of this! I think initially I was using too much. Hard to believe how little of the stuff is needed. I'm still practicing. I put it on yesterday evening, got up the courage to go outside after I felt like I had done a decent job, and went to my mom's to take her to dinner. When I walked in the door she said- "Your face looks great! What are you doing differently?" I was so taken aback, I almost started crying! I think it'll only get better and I'm so excited!

YAY!!!!!! Didn't wear it to work today, but I think I will tomorrow...

Nessy any positive progress to report?

Just wanted to let you know you and your situation are on my mind constantly. I was really pushing you to try it. I do hope you haven''t given in too early.

If you are still hating it...can you go in and watch the clerk and her techinique as she applies it to you? Watch closely using a mirror. Pay close attention. It is different than most others.

DKS

Another tip... make sure any moisturizer or whatever is soaked into your skin. If your skin or brushes are damp/moist, it doesn't go on as naturally.

Get used to those "You have great skin" comments :) I mean, not only does it cover imperfections naturally, but because it doesn't clog, isn't oily, and doesn't irritate, you actually do get better skin.

Yay!!! Yours and my post hit at two minutes apart. I didn't even read this until now. I have been waiting for your post...never thought to go backwards to look for it. It was here along...and you were writing at the same time I was! I told you I was really consumed with your frustration...and we were on the same wave length. Too funny.

Yes...it will get better. If you drive a car...do you remember when you were learning? I was so worried I would roll into someone...or not stop in time. That was all that was on my mind as a student driver. Now, it is all second nature to me. I haven't thought about that aspect of driving in years.

It is the same with BE. You are so self conscious now of the new light NAKED feel that you doubt it can be anything but nothing. You are so consumed with it you won't allow yourself to wear it to work. Well...there will come a time you can apply it quickly without doubt...and never think about it again. Now tell me what other makeup you can do that with? You are going to need a few more comments unsolicited ....for your faith to kick in.

You mentioned your skin tone is a richer hue...I wonder if a trip in to the store for a brush sweep of a different color blush would help you. That blush area will end up looking like a cherubs cheek. Just a glow of color...I just went in and tried something that was bubblegum pink...argghhh... but I felt so pretty all day long. Think I am going back for it. So not only will your technique get better...but you haven't attempted eyes, or highlighting, or accent shading...it will for sure get better!!

DKS

If you decide you''re going to stick with BE, the next thing I would try is the "5 piece complexion" kit. It comes with a very soft pinkish color that can be used for blush, lips. A color called "true" which is a bit of a sparkling peach. I use it everyday. Another color called "warmth" which is supposed to look like the sun kissed you. (although it''s way too dark for me) And a "radiance" that is for all over your face. It kind of gives you a glowing look. Super fun to play with and it comes with tips and ideas on what to do with them.

I LOVE BARE MINERALS!!!!! I''ve been using it for 7-8 years and will never use a liquid foundation ever again. It did take some getting used to at first. I had to ween myself off the liquid, but now that I have, my skin has never looked or felt better. I too have oily skin and BM really helps with the shine. It will take a little practice, but you will find the right shade, the right briush (for more coverage, get the kabuki brush, it really helps with more coverage). You will be a convert I promise and join the BM band wagon :)

Have fun and good luck!
