Just wanting some PS feedback

the jeweller making my ring has suggested bars instead of claws.

I actually like the idea from the drawing/CAD they have sent but no idea what they look like in reality have asked for pics but while I wait was wondering if anyone has done/seen this?

it’s for an asscher cut stone

I could be wrong, however the stone in this ring is bar-set.

DK :))

Here's another, the inspiration ring on the ring:

The corners are set with bars rather than claws.

DK :))

Thankyou DK that is very helpful.
I actually like the look of them with the square shape not so much the round. So that’s good.

all my rings are claw set so going for the bar might be a nice change

I personally do not like claws or prongs, however I like bars as they look more secure to me.

I have not had anything bar-set yet, and this Amethyst is going to be bezel-set.

IMHO, bar-set could overwhelm a small stone, it's all in the proportions.

DK :))

These were the two options.

the stone is almost 9ct although asscher cut so doesn’t seem that large but I think sizeable enough for the bars

Of the two, I definitely prefer the bar-set over claws!

Here’s my asscher with bars. The bars are a bit chunkier than I would like, but still they do offer great protection. Maybe these bars are really called tabs. Anyway, this is what they look like.

Thank you. I imagine they would be very similar. I will ask that they be as slim as possible

I have an asscher with tab prongs and love how they emphasise the octagonal shape and also protect a side of the stone that could be fairly exposed in some setting styles. Just bear in mind that the finer they are the less protective they’ll be for the corners of your stone!

Prefer the tab set above. Very fluid with the stone and more organic if you kwim.

Stunning.

2 amazing examples of how this just works so perfectly with the right stone. Far better than claw prongs in this case IMO.

I really like the bar/tabs! I have a round CS with something similar and really like it. I’d love it with your stone.

Another example of tab prongs. This time with an OEC. Looks amazing with the OEC as well as the above step cuts. IMO.

Tabs are fine if done correctly aka not thick and chunky.

Do you have a side view you could share?

Knowing what I know now, bars. I love claws because they're a great look, but they can be delicate too. Bars can be really lovely as long as you have a really good bench and it fits the aesthetic of your ring.

@lissyflo ma'am, you can't share something like this with a single picture, you know how we roll!

Here’s a side view pic for you!

IRL the tabs are barely noticeable looking down from top view but give enough coverage that I’m relaxed wearing it, which is important to me in an everyday ring - Caysie did a great job modifying an antique inspo pic I sent to her.

I don’t know if it’s the grooves running down the tabs that’s soften the metal and make it a little less prominent - similar to the engraving on your setting changing your stone’s performance somehow? I’m following that thread with interest to see people’s opinions on how settings affect a stone - especially with step cuts I think they can do with as much help from a setting as possible (mine more so than your Yoram beauty!).

C13031_Malone (1 of 2).jpgI wanted an unconventional setting for a unique sapphire from John Dyer. I had the jeweler do this and it has bars on 2 ends. I like variety.

Yay you have all made me super excited about the bars with these gorgeous inspo pics. I really like the side profiles too

I imagine they may stand out more on a coloured stone but I am sold on the bars

Please keep posting the Inspo pics tho:lol:

If you can find a skilled jeweler to do beautiful claws, preferably double claws, that would really lend itself to a classic look.

@Arcadian what would you like to know? I assume you mean details?

Thank you. Those grooved bars are really attractive.

Yes indeedy. Would love to know what prompted this design and whatever else you're willing to share!

I had been looking for watermelon tourmaline stuff. found and got this necklace online.

I saw they do custom work and I had found a bicolor sapphire from the natural sapphire company and that led me to more searches on bicolor sapphires that took me to John Dyers site and I was like wow. Saw that green one and had to have it. I wanted it set in something that gave the impression of a vine but not really if you know what I mean. not the classic engagement looking ring but nice. I found that the guys I got the pendant from had a custom ring they'd done I loved https://www.djoriginals.com/product/c7559-yellow-and-champagne-diamond-engagement-ring/

So I asked for something similar .the diamond was their idea. In real life my design is a little more contrasty

Its beautiful and thank you for telling me the story behind it! It looks organic but modern. Love what the outcome was!
