Basket setting too bulky?

Hi everyone! I'm new here but have been lurking for a while. I originally had a 1.5 carat rectangular radiant diamond set in a 4-prong setting but felt it was too high. The jeweler told me a basket setting would definitely be more secure than the 4-prong setting and it would sit lower. So I'm having it reset in this basket setting from Stuller and currently waiting to get it back. Now after researching, I'm worried that I made the wrong choice. Does this look like it has too much metal on the sides? Will this affect the brilliance because it's not getting as much light? My fiancé also thinks the stone will now look smaller because it's sitting lower. Any thoughts?

Hi! Don't panic yet!... sometimes these things look different in real life than in a flat, 2 dimensional view on a computer screen. Have you seen it in person?
I personally prefer a low setting. I just feel it doesn't get bumped on things as easily and, depending on one's situation as to how their knuckle is in relation to the size of their finger where the ring sits, the lower setting helps keep it from spinning on the finger (which is super annoying to me).
It is the light that enters from the top that determines its brilliance (think about rings in bezel settings... light only comes from the top!).
Can it be returned to Stuller without penalty to you if, upon seeing it PRIOR to the diamond being set, you do not like it?
You said you didn't like how it was sitting high before... maybe you are just a bit nervous about the change? It is always an unknown. I have had many mountings over the years and have been nervous each and every time, so I get your trepidation.
I think a 1.5 ct rectangular radiant will be stunning in a basket mounting with the diamond shank. Very elegant. I think it will look more "high end" than what you have now.
Can you post of picture of what your ring setting currently looks like?

Thanks for your response! It made me feel less worried about how it may turn out. I was also thinking it may be the super close-up view that's making me think it looks so bulky. I haven't seen it in person yet, as the jeweler didn't have one in stock to show me, or even anything like it. We settled on that one because I was specifically looking for a low setting with a pave band that was neither too thick nor too thin. I believe this one is 2mm in width.

The jeweler currently has my ring so that it's ready to be set as soon as it comes in. I don't think I'm able to return it, even before he sets my stone in it though, as it is a custom order. This is my current setting. While it's beautiful, the twisted shank is not really my style. I don't have any profile views, but it was a 4-prong setting with a cathedral.

As already said, the light enters from the top not the side so a basket setting won’t affect it.
Personally I think your diamond will look bigger in the new Stuller setting.
I think your original setting with the double twist shoulders actually detracted from your lovely centre diamond. Too fussy. And if you’re keeping the old setting, a lovely emerald or sapphire would look fabulous in there.

Your diamond is gorgeous! Please post photos of the new ring!

That’s what I felt, too! I think a simple setting will allow the diamond to stand out more. We aren’t keeping the old setting, but a sapphire sounds like it would be really pretty in there!

Thank you! I will definitely post pics of the new ring. Should be getting it in a week!

Update: I definitely panicked for no reason! The new setting is perfect. I was worried the profile view would have too much metal and was thinking I should’ve gotten diamonds in the basket. But now after seeing it, I think that would have been too much bling/flash for me. I love the lower setting and it still sparkles like crazy! The setting definitely looks a lot different in person than a zoomed-in stock photo on a screen.

I love it! Excellent choice and much safer for the diamond to not be set too high!:appl:

Absolutely gorgeous, perfection... so happy for you!
