Does anyone here work in mgmt consulting? DB has an interview with BCG soonish and he is very anxious about it as he has never interviewed with anyone this major before. I am really hopeful bc he got this interview with no connections and didn''t even use career services at school--he just emailed them a resume.

If anyone does work in consulting, could they give some good advice on how to ace the interview? He bought a book on it but real people are always better I think.

There''s lots of info on their website about interviewing, lots of sample questions and cases.
They get so many applications it''s hard to even get an interview. (He must have really interested them.)
They are super super selective. Tell him to practice practice practice his questions and doing cases.
I wish him luck! Let us know how it goes.

For those who don''t know, BCG = Boston Consulting Group. (World Renown!)

Scintillating...

yeah he''s been pouring over that website. One of his friends got a job at mckenzie and is coaching him some...hopefully that will help.

mostly he''s worried bc the interview is so soon and he has basically a week to prep cases.

I can''t remember, but is he still in school? The Career Services at most colleges and universities will do practice interviews, and will sometimes even tape them so he can see what he''s doing well and not so well. They might be able to squeeze him in.

good one, I casually suggested it and he thought it was a good idea

Needless to say he doesn''t know I''m querying my fellow PS-ers!

Thanks!

I used to work for one of their competitors. BCG is a very prestigious firm, and he will learn a ton there should he get the job. However, there will be many late nights and lots of travel in his future til he climbs the ladder (and even after). The lifestlye is something they downplay during interviews but you guys should think a lot about. Consulting is an amazing launchpad for a business career but the lifestlyle can be pretty miserable (or exhilirating, depends on your outlook/goals/individual experience there).

For the interview, I''d advise him to work on cases as much as possible, and beyond that, just be himself.

Gar. Not that I don''t appreciate your concern, but to be frank ALL of the career options he is considering are this bad or worse. Neurosurgeon, anyone???? He has this idea that anything worthwhile in life takes 120 hrs/wk. I get quite upset about this from time to time but it doesn''t make sense to fuss too much about it now. I have talked about it with him though.

I am hoping he will find a happy medium eventually but the only way for him to find out will be a few hard knocks I am afraid. If he wants that lifestyle, well....we''ll see how it goes.

The consulting is a two year gig only, unless he decided he loves it and doesn''t want to go to med school.
