Hi All

I noticed today that one of the prongs on my fiancee's platinum tiffany type setting has become bent. Its one of those nearest the band and it appears to have been knocked out by 1mm or so.

The prong still holds the stone, but it is skewed.

Should I ignore this, or is it a problem?

Yes, I'd get it looked at. Tiffany style mounts are prone to that, and depending on how many prongs you have and how well they protect the stone that style of mount can also be prone to chipping or cracking the diamond.
That may sound like a joke, but it is easier than you might think if the girdle of the stone is exposed. It takes a goodly amount of force to bend a platinum prong, and if the ring is regularly exposed to abuse you might consider a lower head or even a remount with a prongless setting.
I cannot count how many four prong-tiffanies I've seen with a damaged stone due to an exposed girdle.

Actually, now I come to look at it, it appears that several of the prongs have moved a little. This surprises me, as the ring is well cared for.

The ring is similar to this one and it came from a reputable dealer: http://www.whiteflash.com/Engagement-Rings/Styles/Solitaire/Platinum-6-Prong-Tiffany-Style_667.htm#

I am surprised that it has become bent so quickly.

Unfortunately bending and breaking are hazards of prongs. I've had both bent and broken prongs. I am not hard on jewelry. It just happens sometimes. A snag on a sweater or an accidental ding the right way.

I had one prong in a 6 prong head straightened 2 times. Then my jeweler advised a head replacement due to the weakened prong. The smith guessed the problem occurred in the casting process. That may be the problem with your ring.

Get the prongs checked and replace the head if necessary.

Not saying this is the case. I am a consumer but one time I had a ring which was sized and when I got it back the prongs looked squint, I took it to another jeweler who tightened the prongs. The other jeweler never said and I never asked but I wonder since if this was because the ring was sized but the head or shoulders was not checked afterwards.

So, you didn't have the ring resized and due to the style or going down or up more than two sizes would the ring have changed shape or something?

Maybe a jeweler or someone else can comment on this?
