Best spacer to wear between platinum pieces?

I have a platinum solitaire and I just ordered a gorgeous mixed shape diamond band to wear with it. I’ll assess when I receive it but I’m assuming that I’m going to want to wear a spacer. What is the best metal to wear in between to protect the platinum pieces? Sterling, white gold - 10,14, 18k, or another platinum band?

Platinum is harder than gold but more expensive, generally. For a spacer, I’d Use 14k as it’s harder than higher karat gold.

Hardness you are mentioning is toughness.
Harder materials, diamond are not as tough as softer stuff like Jadeite.
Silver will wear out golds. But nickel white gold alloys, while softer from wearing away point of view, will not bend as easily so 9K nickel WG would be the cheapest and whitest close to platinum color.
We are all super worried these days about nickel allergies, but for 70-80 years people seemed to manage just fine!

I’d go with platinum. eweddingbands.com has a fantastic selection for very reasonable prices.

That‘s what I use. I bought my knife edge spacer on Blue Nile.

Yes - good point, thanks Garry. Toughness is the correct term, my bad. Needed more coffee this morning when I posted.

Thank you everyone! I’ll probably just buy a platinum spacer. I was just curious because I figured a white gold spacer could be used as a “sacrifice band” if that makes since. A 10k white gold spacer will only cost me around $40.

I received my band yesterday and I’m absolutely loving it. I love the look and prefer not to wear a spacer. I’ve assessed the situation and it’s definitely going to rub against the prongs and basket of my solitaire. Im still playing around but I don’t think the diamonds on the band can reach my diamond because the prongs of my solitaire are in the way. I do have a 1.2mm platinum twist band coming to play with but due to the height of my solitaire and band I don’t think my twist band is going to help at all. I’d need a 2mm band to make any difference in the rubbing. I honestly really want to just rock it. It’s platinum rubbing against platinum. What’s the worst that can happen? Just scratching that can be polished out right? Thoughts? 71793FA6-5415-4A98-98ED-3AC9993C7B62.jpeg016FC7DC-6545-49E2-97AF-E8C633D1FC82.jpeg564A17FE-37C5-4D16-B64D-A2602E011731.jpeg

I would wear a spacer with that set. It it is nice looking without - but for day to day wear you will want to avoid the prongs rubbing like they will.

Yes definitely get a spacer! I did not get a spacer for mine, and my prongs are rubbed down to nibs. :( my wedding ring rubbed just at the right spot and I didn’t notice it for years. Now I’m paying the price, sigh

Thank you. Can I ask what metal your rings were?

Man I’m so bummed. I played around with an old Tiffany ring that has a twist shank and my little 1.3mm platinum twist band most likely isn’t going to work as a spacer. I have an antique 18k band that works perfectly but the platinum will eat it up and I’m not liking the look. Any suggestions for spacers?
