I recently made the leap to buy Hazel from pearaffair, and was curious about people’s thoughts/experiences of bezelling a marquise?

@Niel , would love to know your thoughts since you’ve previously owned the stone and per one of your prior threads didn’t think the stone would survive bezelling?

If a bezel isn’t recommended due to concerns with pointy corners is there a “best way” to prong set a marquise? Based on some searches online some seem to like to prong set the tips with Vs and some do single prongs on either side.

No advice from me. Just came here to say I can't wait to see what you do with it!!!!

I would not bezel her I would put a faux bezel with prongs. Or a collet style.

Is it due to breakage concerns?

Also I’m not sure I know what a collet is...

Here is an example from JbG.

Unless there was a structural reason for it not being in a bezel, I’d probably lean that way as well, or at a minimum, use a gold cup like @KKJohnson did with her setting to really play up that yellow color.

I don’t like diamond halos. But I like the idea of maybe an engraved metal “halo” in 18k yg. And maybe side “leaves” with red garnets which is my birthstone.

Any chance you would mount her east-west?

This is how I pronged my marquise but I think a bezel will work just fine

Hmm. I think your marquise isn’t as “pointy” as mine. Which maybe make it harder to bezel I imagine?

Also I’m asking for a quote from Sally at Hearts of Water whose work I love. And if she makes an “open” setting then prongs have more wiggle room for when I have it set here in the US I think.

I think the hand modeling is by @pearaffair

Due to the shallow cut and the exposed sides of a 6 prong setting, I have always either bezeled or haloed ( at the same height as the marquise) my marquise.
My mother's marquise is heavily chipped after years of moderate wear. Her stone is beautiful. Last time I louped the stone I nearly cried to see the chips even though she is in a 6 prong setting.

That's my worry about prongs as well which is why I think maybe a metal "halo" would be protective while still being my style (I don't like diamond/gem halos, never have, couldn't tell you why).

Although I have a 5 stone diamond ring with exposed girdles that I've worn for a few years now with no issues. Just louped it recently and it's all pristine. They are AGS0 modern cuts though so probably the girdles are less thin than some antique cuts.

No becuase of the concern about performance.
Ah. Gotcha.
Hmm. Maybe I’ll do some experimentation with gold foil later this week to see. Do you think that’d be a fair approximation of bezel effect?

Haha thanks!
I’ve already emailed 4 benches to get quoted and thoughts!

I would totally bezel it and then halo it. Maybe like a thin “show” bezel more for decor with prongs to do the hard work.

Have you ever seen my original e ring? Let me see if I can show you the stone before and after it got bezeled

I probably have but I can't bring it to mind right now...

And I’ll post my own inspiration pics! I’m excited that your ring finger will allow you to try Hazel on the second you get her!!!

Omg I can’t wait to see what you end up doing with Hazel!!!! She’s going to look incredible on you! I call dibs if you sell the original setting for cheap ;)

Hope the pics help!

Btw is it totally poor form that I didn’t label all the pics? The round halo is Mrs B, I think (by DK) and some of the first faux bezels with claws are CVB...

There’s a stuller in the mix and a whole lotta Pinterest randoms.

Thanks for all the photo inspiration!!
Decisions, decisions.

Step 1: do some DIY bezeling with gold foil.
Step 2: Compare quotes
Step 3: reset!

Mine is 10.66x5.39x3.40mm. 4 claws and tips

Is gorgeous. And huge!
Love how dainty the prongs are. You can barely see them.

DIY bezeling with foil is a brilliant idea. I’m stealing that!

Given @Niel input having had the stone personally, I'd go with a 'prong in bezel' setting suggested by @the_mother. You get the protection of the outer rim, but retain the maximum of lighting entering from the full top of the stone. There is a subtle difference between prong in bezel and collet, at least as I use the terms. A collet has the rim of metal and the prongs are outside that rim or emerge from that rim. The prong in bezel has a metal rim and the prongs are inside the rim. The ever-popular halo is a prong in bezel type setting. I'm with you, though, I'm more of a metal halo/bezel lover for my own collection.
