OK....so my birthday is approaching quickly (Feb. 12), and I have been really wanting to have a birthstone ring made, and I found the perfect inspiration (below). I would however modify it by having an Amethyst as the center and emeralds (hubbys birthstone) in place of diamonds on the leaves in either 14 or 18kt gold? Plus I think I would do something different with the prongs. I contacted WF and haven''t heard back from them yet (i''m not even sure if they do this sort of work). Anyway, I am deciding between two Amethysts from AJSGems (has anyone else dealt with them?). Can someone give me opinions on them, please? What makes one better than the other? And can anyone recommend a good vendor to work with on a piece like this?

Here is the second:

I don''t think I want one any bigger than 3.5 carats.

Hi Lady, I know absolutely nothing about amethysts, except that they are my birthstone also! But from my non-experienced view I''d choose stone #3. Your inspiration ring is beautiful!!

Hi ladyluvsluxury, I think if the first one is not to dark I like the color the best. Next would be # 2.
While I am no expert I wonder if a stone that large would suit that setting. Good luck Doug

Hey Doug! I know what you mean about the size, that is really why I am trying to find jeweler to work with before I purchase any one of the stones. I agree with you in that I like the color of the first stone, but I also agree with Sunkist, I like the shape of the second one....I do know from other jewelry I own that the darker the amethyst is alone the darker it looks when on the finger b/c there is little light passing through (i.e. finger blocking in the back...lol). So sometimes the darker hues look most desirable alone but in jewelry appears considerably darker...AGHHH I''m confused...Ok here are some other ideas....ok the file is too large.. BRB I think you all might like this one too...

I personally like the look of the second one. I think that the first may be way too dark.

Ok I''m trying this again....imagine this setting without the middle shank...so it would be a split shank design...the center stone would be an Amethyst and the round stones would be emeralds...maybe square emeralds along the shank...what do you all think of this one??

Hi LLL. I received your PM and replied. The email you sent should have been redirected to another contect - apologies for the delay. In any event, Bob is our colored gemstone expert and I've left a message for him to provide you with input. With this project it may be easiest to call him (or I can have him call you) and discuss specifics.

Beautiful photos by the way.

Thanks for responding John, I did receive your PM and have responded!

I love the ring with the light blue stone in it! Is that an aquamarine or a topaz?

Deb

ABGF - The stone in the first ring is an Aquamarine (my mother''s birthstone), that is how I ran across it....but then started thinking about the birthstone ring I have always wanted to create with my hubby''s and my birthstones....So you like the first one more than the second? I am kind of torn...although they are two completely styles i.e. the first seems more delicate and whimsical and the second seems more regal....Hmmmmmmm

I like the first ring better. I actually like the dark color of the first stone you posted but I like the shapes of #2 and #3 better. #1 seems uneven to me.

Like the first, 'cause quartz is not terribly brilliant, so it takes either deeper color or huge size to make the result impressive. Besides, at some level of violet-ness, there is no other stone to match fine Amethyst color - so I'd be looking for that.

Now, I wish you didn't pic the pear shape already, because of that stupendous concave cut cushion on Wink's lit!

It may not hurt to look HERE too ...

One great thing about amethyst is that the fine color, large rough and popularity make it super fit material for the nicest cuts and gem carvings. If you would want one, this is a great excuse
