so i was thinking that it might be kind of romantic to have diamonds and his birthstone (aquamarine) in my band and him have mine (blue topaz) in his. is this uber-cheesy or a good idea?

While I think it''s a cool idea (my favorite color is blue) neither one of those stones is necessarily great for everyday wear. Topaz has perfect cleavage so if it gets knocked, it can shatter, so while it''s a 8 on the Moh''s... It''s really a bit of a gamble. And Aquas are a 7.5 on the Moh''s scale. I really wouldn''t wear anything on a daily basis except spinel, sapphire, and diamond. I personally wouldn''t do anything under an 8 on the Moh''s if you''re going to wear it everyday.

I love Blue topaz and if I get one as an ering, I won''t wear it everyday. This is why I prefer a spinel or sapphire. I want to wear it!

I think it''s a great idea! Then again, I am biased in favor of it since my engagement ring center stone is a garnet, which is FI''s birthstone. Hers is the same stone, but a different color; to make it more unique and to reflect our different tastes, mine is a purple-ish pink garnet, and hers is a deep cranberry red.

The difficulty lies in what Freke said- it''s difficult to pull off if your birthstones are not the best stones to wear for everyday rings. Garnets are hard enough as long as we are careful, so it worked out. I would suggest maybe getting harder stones in the same colors as your respective birth stones. They would look the same and have significance, but allow you to wear the rings every day. I am not sure whether gemstones in those colors other than the ones you named exist, but I bet people in the colored stone forum would be more than happy to help out if you decide to go that route.

I''d do lighter sapphires for the aqua and medium for the topaz.

Sapphires do come in greenish blue shades, but they aren''t quite like the bluish greenish of the aqua/topaz persuasion.

thank you so much. i never thought of the durability factor. that is a big reason to not to. however, getting another stone with a similar color would be a great alternative. i am going to look into it and find information. thanks again.

Here''s an idea: why not put one small symbolic stone on the inner side of the ring, set into the metal? Like Roberto Coin always puts a tiny ruby inside his jewelery. It''s like a secret that the two of you share, and then you don''t have to worry about knocking it.

Wishful, you''ll want to be careful with those garnets. Depending on the species, many are really not hard enough for everyday wear and sooner or later you''ll chip it! How are they set? Have you posted pictures?

I believe some one this board did that with a tarheel...can''t remember who right now, but they put a small stone on the inside of the ring.
