Does anyone know anything about black star sapphires? Has anyone seen one in person?

Interesting that the star is due to hematite and not rutile. Also, "Black star sapphires are usually low domed so as to best display the star as a very high dome would make the arms of the star invisible and only a golden sheen would be observed."

They seem best suited to men more than women, though, don't you think?

Thanks.

I just know that I saw them frequently for low prices when I was looking for a blue star sapphire.

I am female and I'd prefer a black star sapphire to another color. But, I love black, so it is a personal choice I think. :)

I like things that are different so of course I'd go for a black star sapphire.
however, it would have to be true black and have a fine star!

Hi there :wavey: I happen to have 2 black star sapphires with golden asterism, but they are tiny at around 2 carat each. Unlike blue star sapphires or star rubies, asterism will only happen under a direct light source for black sapphires. So most of the time you will be having a totally black opaque cab ring on your finger. However there's a certain beauty you will find in black ones in golden asterism, It's like viewing stars from the pitch dark sky.
Personally I find bigger black sapphires suitable for men and smaller ones (maybe in a 3-5 stone ring with a mixture of diamonds in between) looks pretty cool for ladies. I'll end with pictures my black star sapphires. One of them has a 12 ray star, can you spot it? image_1106.jpgimage_1107.jpg

Thanks all ! I really appreciate it. So, I learned they only star with a light source. It really is pretty, though.

Beautiful avitar, Snowy !

Thanks! Your OEC is something I dream of too!

I would totally set and wear one of those! Before I got into "real" jewelry I was pretty stuck on sterling silver, onyx, hematite, and marcasite. I love the black and metallic look.

Awww, thanks so much, Snowy.

My sister has one, I'll have to see if I can get a pic of it! The star is silvery white, and it's just lovely. My grandfather bought it for my mom when he was stationed in southeast asia in the 50's. I think it's from Thailand, but I'll have to ask.

I think they're really intriguing looking. Not sure how much I'd like a black cab with no star most of the time, though. Yeah, maybe -- depends on how it's set; it could look cool.

Yeah, it's definitely not a stone to wear to work. You will get very distracted trying to create the star under any light source you see. It's more of a evening stone where you wear it to ballrooms or restaurants with those strong spotlights. All you need to do is to move your hand in a circular motion and the star follows. A good star will have a faster movement. I'm crazy about having a dome tiny star sapphires ring to see lots of stars under a strong spotlight.

That sounds really cool.

yes, it does! I'm tempted to go look for some, just to see them!

Oooh I like them a lot.

Snowyrin, your's are beautiful.

Hi there, thanks all for the compliments! :wavey: I'm hoping to see more star sapphire rings from PSers in future.
