standard and metric measurements

i go to a koi website and people from other parts of the world (like UK) use the metric system. they say something like.... my koi is 70cm and i keep thinking is 70" long

the metric system is used widely in the medical field, so i don''t have any problem converting any measurements. they automatically translate in my head. i do however get thrown off with degrees celsius!

that is not an ''automatic'' conversion for me.
37 degrees celsius sounds like it should be COLD!

Hi DF,

Young people in the UK have been brought up with the metric system. It ''s easy because everything is in units of tens, hundreds, thousands.

However, the older generation (like me) still cling to the old system. The metric system has been forced upon us in recent years, so that all goods are sold/advertised using the metric system. Shop owners can be finded if they do not comply.

However, people are still asking for 4oz of ham when they go to the butchers! We still prefer to get on the scales and know what we weigh in pounds. We still measure distance by miles...and I still like to know how much gas costs per gallon!

It''s all about keeping in line with our European partners.......but I''m just hoping they don''t try and force the Euro on us.....as we are quite happy with our pounds, shilling and pence:bigsmile:]

I had a lady in the village supermarket asking me to help her calculate the amount of sugar needed from kilos to pounds as she wanted to make jam and had no idea, bless her! I don't have too much of a problem as I have to calculate medicines etc frequently, but still have to think about it with recipes

So yes I can find it confusing my American BF! I always find that if I ask for 4 oz of ham, the server always has to say " oh how ever many kilos it is" as if I make it confusing for her!

Like Miss Blod, I hope they leave the pound alone too

You wanna hear confusing? I think of air temperature in Fahrenheit, and water (or body) temperature in Celsius because of my science training. And I still have trouble converting except for a few key temperatures (100C=212F, 37C=98.6F)!

I''m a little better with volume and mass measurements, but not much. I know what a milliliter (or CC) looks like, but translating that to oz. is a problem.

Years ago we were told that if we wanted to do business with our European trading partners, we''d have to go metric. Our kids, now 41 and 42 were taught only the metric system in school. We bought into the idea that "everyone" was going metric so we''d better get used to it. Turns out, our major trading partner, the US, did not go metric. Now, we''re in limbo as some of us older folks can convert, but lots of us can''t. Lots of confusion!!!

By the way, I love, love, love your "Ray" avatar. I don''t know why Blockbuster stopped using Carl and Ray in their TV ads; they were hilarious!!!!

The rest of the world uses Metric measurements, so no, I don't get confused

A much oft-heard whinge over here in australia is "Why do the americans want to be different?" (with regards to metric vs imperial units.)

Sorry, don''t do metric, don''t get it at all. Luckily, I don''t really need to unless someone is giving me a persons body weight in metric (job related)- then I make them convert it for me! I think it was one of Fords stupidist ideas ever- and given that it NEVER took off, I''d say he failed miserably in getting the USA to convert. Maybe we are just good old fashioned stick in the muds. Do they even teach metric in schools now?? I''m in Mass, don''t know how it is on the east coast but noone uses it ever in daily living here-except when asking for a 2 liter bottle of soda

what even more confusing

isn''t 5 ml or cc''s a teaspoon? 15 ml''s is a tablespoon, and from cooking class I learned one ounce is one teaspoon...so an ml or cc would be an ounce. I could be wrong, but that sticks in my head...I deal with cc''s or ml''s with kids medication...

Hee thanks - I felt like a change and thought he was cute with his Hai Karate!

454 grams in a pound

0.454 kilograms in a pound or roughly, 1/2 a kilo to a pound!

In Australia we use metric system. We count in tens so to me it makes sense to use measures in tens. The funny thing is even though we use metric system, I still find it easier to measure height in foot/inches
