Blue or Yellow Sapphire Ring?

I’m looking for guidance on my last (for quite a long time) big jewelry purchase.
I’ve narrowed it down to a sapphire right hand ring.
I’ve even further narrowed it down to one blue sapphire ring and one yellow sapphire ring.
I’m hoping to wear it frequently. I already have a big cocktail RHR so I’m thinking this purchase should be more of a no nonsense setting. But that being said, I’m a “certain age” so small and dainty just don’t work for me.
The first ring is a 3.15 Thailand GIA certified emerald-cut blue sapphire set in 18k. I have spent a lot of time with this stone and it is very clean and a darker blue. Definitely not cornflower blue or that famous Madagascar royal blue although it has flashes of that. I actually prefer a darker blue sapphire. It lights up in the sun and has vivid flashes of blue in indoor lighting. Low profile no nonsense setting.
The second ring is a 4.22 carat Ceylon GIA certified oval yellow sapphire. It’s set in a platinum diamond halo with a simply gorgeous undergallery. The color is a nice vivid deep yellow with just a hint of orange but not enough to make you think orange. Still solidly vibrant yellow.
I was pretty sure I was going with the emerald-cut because I just kept coming back to it. Everytime I was in the store, I would gravitate towards it. I always talked myself out of it by telling myself (1) it’s not Sri Lanka, (2) it’s a darker blue (3) the setting is nothing to write home about, (4) it’s expensive. But I was just so attracted to that solid emerald-cut and mysterious blue.
Then my jeweler showed me the yellow Ceylon ring and I fell for the elegant sparkly-ness. Now this IS a setting to write home about! Everything about this ring is amazing. Everything about this called my name. Sparkly. Drop dead gorgeous platinum setting. Big vibrant stone.

So then why am I still thinking about the emerald-cut? So then why am I writing this thread at all?

I feel like I will regret leaving the gorgeous yellow sapphire on the table.

I’m so conflicted.
Oh and I should probably mention price because it DOES matter! The blue sapphire is considerably more money!!
Thanks all!

Oooh, both are very pretty. Are you drawn to it because it's more expensive (funny how prices do that, lol), or does it just tug at your heart? If someone were to buy the blue sapphire today, and you missed out, would you regret it? What about the yellow? I really think it's personal preference for you at this point. Get the one that speaks to you.

Both are gorgeous. I personally lean towards the blue stone. It is luscious and rich, a very different personality from the flirty, sunshine-y yellow stone.

Curve ball idea - buy the blue sapphire loose - and reset it in a replica of the yellow sapphire setting with DK?

Both are nice but personally I LOVE that blue one. The colour is rich and not too dark. And I find the cut and setting unique, unlike the yellow one (which is still lovely!). You won't go wrong with either.

Imagine someone snapped them up today. Which would you be more sad about missing out on?

They are both beautiful. Perhaps it's the shape of the blue sapphire that is more attractive to you?

Wow, thank you all for such great insight already!
So I think the “which one would devastate you if it got snapped up” question is a good one. I need to really think on that.
I will report back as that thought trickles through my head...

Yup.
Definitely.
Something about emerald-cuts!
I am just so attracted!!

They are both unique and pretty! I would go to the one that makes your heart sing. Sometimes we can't explain why it is, but when we feel it, we just feel it!

I agree.
I think the yellow is perhaps the “better” ring but still...

Maybe you should look at other emerald cut sapphires and compare them to this one? You prefer the emerald cut but maybe this isn't the right stone for you because you are having such difficulty deciding.

Or maybe you feel bad about spending so much money? If it's the one then it's the one no matter what the price is!

Both are gorgeous!
To me the yellow one is the ‘prettier’ ring... yet the blue has the ‘magic’
Personally I would opt for the big blue. I feel that every woman needs a diamond and blue sapphire

If you aren't sure which one of the two to choose, perhaps that means that neither is quite special enough to you to be The One? Just a thought...

Second thought, get both! Haha. Good luck. I think they're both equally lovely. :)

Exactly.
Thank you for articulating it.

Would love to.
But alas....

I’m in the minority but I prefer the yellow! You already have a stunning bomb of a blue sapphire ring and in my opinion I think you “need” the yellow more than the blue. But of course you should get whatever speaks to you more!

Haha! I totally get the “need” more.
The yellow would fill a gap in my collection. Whenever I see the amazing breadth of some of our fellow PS’s colored gemstones collections I realize how far I still have to go....

Oh it’s a tough choice. Which one makes you cry more when you imagine that someone else got it while you were still thinking? Get that one.

On one hand, I get the filling the gap thing (ie yellow), on the other hand, the blue is so different from bombe that I think it’s ok to get another blue. Sorry am of no help at all!

They are both very nice!

However, if I were to choose just one, then I would choose the blue Sapphire for its shape, cutting and colour, as yellow/orange do not suit me generally.

In addition, I believe the blue Sapphire ring is more low key and wearable to me personally. The yellow Sapphire ring is more showy and dressier.

Personal preferences and all that though.

DK :))

I vote the yellow, it is gorgeous and I love the setting!! The blue, while nice, looks just mundane. If you really wanted another blue, I would wait and find another that really speaks to you. The blue is too dark, and the setting looks like a heavy stock type setting, and I'm not a fan of the spray of three diamonds on each side.

if truly you can’t decide between the two I’d get neither.

Thank you Niel.
Definitely the prudent choice.
I gotta admit my heart is stuck on the blue sapphire.
I have pics of trying it on my hand as far back as 2 years ago!!
I’m still mulling it over but that’s where I’m leaning.
And I can’t express how much I appreciate everyone’s input. It’s nice to hear things articulated out loud that perhaps I was only thinking.

Oh..and I recognize that perhaps the setting falls slightly below par but it’s a no nonsense daily driver until I’m ready to reset.

See I knew you had a preference of one ;)

I’m going to step away from this decision for a moment and regroup
I will folowup with everyone when I’m ready to pull the trigger which will be for my birthday in January.

For what it's worth, I'm not blown away by that blue. It's a tad on the dark side (as, alas, often the case with Thai sapphire), and there's too much darkness/extinction when you view it from an angle.

Love the setting on the yellow one, but it's a little on the orange side for my liking. Like Niel suggests, maybe it's a sign if you can't decide, and you should buy neither. Someday one that makes you fall in love immediately will come.

Exactly what I am thinking which is why I’m stepping away for a moment.
Thank you for perfectly articulating.
And...shhh ....but a different ring entirely caught my eye.
I didn’t want to muddy these waters and I’m just starting to think about it so when I’m ready, I will start a new thread if it’s the one.
PS. You are correct that the pics of the Thai sapphire are the best it gets and it struggles to flash that royal blue in real life lighting conditions.
