Recently I came across this unheated blue sapphire and I am not quite sure if the color is too dark. I know the color is a subjective thing and we can perceive it differently, that’s why I am holding on this stone for a week already and was trying to decide. I really wanted to avoid an expensive mistake especially thinking that the color can be darkened when set. Also, what about the cut? It seems to have some darker areas as it is not a precision cut.Your opinions would be greatly appreciated as I feel more pressure on a making a decision without any support and discussion.

Is this your photos/your hand?
What (specific) lightings have you looked at it, natural and artificial? Any you haven’t duplicated yet, like your work environment?

What type of setting are you wanting? Bezel or prong?

My gut feeling feels me that if you’ve already held on to it for a week and you are still 2nd guessing yourself /wanting input - that’s a bad sign.
wait- not a bad sign, just a sign that it’s not the right stone for you.
Does the dark/extinction areas bother you? That probably won’t go away. But finding a larger unheated nice blue in a precision cut - will be a totally different search parameter than one you used to find this one, for sure. They aren’t common. Would a precision cut in this same shape and color guarantee no extinction? Good question! Heck - if the pavilion of this one could be precision brilliant recut - would it even be the same color?
Is it strictly visual aspect, or does cost of *this* stone come into the equation. Or something else tangible like a lab report giving you pause, or what the report says ‘should’ make you like it- but somethings missing in the love felt, maybe?
So many what if’s - hahahaha!

Totally agree. I think if you've had it a week and are questioning, it's a sign you should return. I have kept things I was "on the fence " about, and regretted it every time

I think it is pretty but if the darker areas bother you now they won't go away, and that feeling of uncertainty probably won't go away either

i suggest you return it and find a stone that doesn't make you second guess

I liked the color from the beginning. These pictures are mine made outdoors in a shade and under the sun. The sapphire has a GIA report and stated as unheated natural corondum. I just started to think that, well … gem enthusiasts and jewelry lovers may see what I don’t see and share their thoughts.
Prongs will be my choice for a setting.

I think the color is beautiful and I also love the cut. I think the color will stay fairly true to what you see IRL if prong-set.

To my eyes, this is a gorgeous blue sapphire and the fact that it is GIA unheated is a plus in my book.

If the price is fair/market for the stone, for me it would be a keeper.

OP, if you love this blue color, if you find the cut attractive, if the size/shape is pleasing to you, if the price is within your budget -- I see no reason not to keep it and set it -- what say you?

Agree. Might be overthinking here

You sapphire will not darken too much in an open, pronged setting

Bezel with closed gallery is a different story but this is still not what I’d consider a dark blue sapphire and will still hold a beautiful color in most settings

Your sapphire is beautiful! If you are concerned about how it might look at its worst, take it to low light situations and fluorescent lighting and see how it behaves. It may appear "turned off," with little light return, but if not, or you don't mind those situations where it might behave this way, I would not hesitate to get it!

Thank you! I did my homework and read about colored stones, saw pictures but I didn’t see lots of them in real life. Family liked the color from the beginning too, but again they have zero exposure to colored gemstones as well.
I’m still getting know my my sapphire and whenever the lights is different I’m grabbing my gem.
Thank you all for your thoughts of the color, cut and so much more…

Thank you all! I say it is a keeper!!! :kiss2:

Thank you :wavey: I was literally checking the list and feel very excited!

I am literally shaking! My sapphire turned neon pink under fluorescent light … OMG
Thank you!

Is this photo taken in fluorescent light like the long tube lights in offices (and like curly bulbs in household lamps)? Or is it taken with an ultraviolet/UV/blacklight? It looks like UV, and is very cool. But if this is what the stone does in typical office lighting, that might be a little alarming...
