I am after a 2-3 ct royal / cornflower blue sapphire for my wife's 40th birthday.

It seems very difficult to separate the good from the bad and prices seem to be harder to determine than diamonds.

Can anyone advise on the following stone I have found?

1. is it a "average / good / excellent" stone
2. What price should it command

Any advice or links to other stones would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Have you seen this stone in person? If not, do you have any videos of this stone taken indoors or outdoor conditions? I’m not sure based on what you have given us what color the stone actually is and whether it is well cut.

If it looks like the first photo in the Mumbai lab report which shows the sapphire as dark in the middle, I would pass. But if it looks like the photo in the GRS Swiss lab, which shows a very pleasing medium cornflower blue, then it’s a great stone. And then it looks more royal blue in the third photo, which looks digitally edited.

For discussion on pricing of unheated blue sapphires, you can follow this thread:

Agreed with @peacechick that I would want pics/video of the stone on someone's hand in natrual lighting, bc I'm afraid that IRL it will be too dark.

Also, consider whether you care about heat treatment . No heat stones are more expensive, and heat treatment is widely accepted (for many, but not everyone). For me personally, I am not willing to pay the $ increase for no heat when heat doesn't affect the durability of the stone (other treatments are different).

Starruby tends to be very competatively priced, but you should be mindful of the returns (where exactly would you need to ship it if it turns out not exactly as expected?). Given I think they use fairly bright lighting, that stone may be a little on the dark side. Impossible to put a price on it without knowing how dark.

1. What is your definition of royal or cornflower blue? Can you please post pictures of the colour you are looking for. I ask because most people's cornflower is royal blue to me. As they say, pictures are worth a thousand words.

2. What is average, good and excellent? For me, it is primarily colour, then the rest is a balance of cutting, and other variables.

3. What price range are you looking at? Unheated only? Any specific shape?

The stone looks rather dark in the video but in fairness, I'm not sure of the lighting condition.

I am not an expert, however the stone in the original post does not tick my fancy in that it is too dark for my liking, the cut and polish are not very good (abrasions can be observed, and facets do not meet or parallel - the latter is important for an emerald cut).

Jeff White has a medium blue emerald cut stone just over 3ct+, no heat, AGL report included. Face up is kind of small for the weight as it is quite deep, however the colour is lovely IMHO and his cutting is great.

Hi

I would prefer no heat

Thanks for the heads up on the lighting

To be honest, im no expert so am just going by terms that i have learned whilst browsing sites, i don't want it too dark or too light, guess thats stating the obvious

any stone recommendations welcome

thanks

Thanks for the link, will take a look, are they known for their stones / cutting?

JW is one of the best precision cutters in the industry, don't take my word for it, Google him and see.

The JW stone looks tons better than the one you originally posted, IMHO. I would trust JW over Starrruby any day, and Jeff's looks to be worth the cost.

Hi

This is a link to the stone at starruby

ive asked for pictures in natural light

Oh my word, that’s so overpriced. Did you see the sapphire ring I linked you to which had a 5 ct unheated blue sapphire? That is how you should peg your pricing.

The Jeff White stone is much better value and the cut is bound to be superb (coming from an award winning cutter). I would love to have a Jeff White stone one day. And it comes with the AGL report certifying that it’s unheated so you have nothing to worry about.

I’m by far any expert but saw this on Etsy a while back at $11500 and now it’s reduced to $8k. Appraisal says unheated but I’d prefer a lab verification.

OP wants a rectangle cut so this will probably be ruled out, but are you not considering this ring? It looks a lot like the other one you were looking at with the GIA lab report and the price is attractive.

It IS what I'm looking for; my concern was there's no lab report but only an appraisal saying it's unheated. I almost bought it a while back for $11500 so the price is extremely tempting - agree with you there. I've gotten some feedback on the other ring and in comparing the 2, I prefer the other one I found. I was sent video of it but not sure how to attach it to my thread.

Hi

Would prefer a rectangle stone, the ring can be made after the stone is bought
