Blue spinel vs blue sapphire cost?

If all things are equal in terms of cut, size, clarity and colour, I would put my money on the Sapphire costing more, a lot more!

However I could be wrong.

DK :))

That’s what I would think too but I’m having a hard time finding a nice blue spinel to compare pricing.

I actually find it's the opposite. A 6mm round spinel in that color cannot be had for $1,695.00. Is it even possible to find a round 6mm in that color regardless of the price? I haven't shopped for spinels in a long time so I don't know how much cobalt blue colored spinels go for but usually they are tiny and full of inclusions and stuff to be good ring center stones. Even the tiny ones are expensive.

That would explain why I’m having such a hard time finding one...

The ones out there with that color that I've seen are like tiny and cut really funny. They almost look like rough material sometimes? Like not faceted properly. Like I would never have given them a second look if they were sapphires if you know what I mean.

I couldn't find an open blue spinel for that price. Sapphires are at least available.
I've been looking for a sapphire blue, not even a true cobalt, spinel for years. I found one, and it was exorbitantly expensive. These are just a couple of cobalts on LT! Love, but can't afford!

Oh for some reason I'd never seen that 1.49ct before but that's just gorgeous....

I know, I want it with a desperation. But I can't justify the cost for myself with everything going on. He has some beautiful stones.

For a bright blue spinel, I think you'd be paying a lot more than for a bright blue sapphire... if you could even find one in the size and shape you wanted. If you were fine with a very grayish blue. the spinel would probably be cheaper.

Thanks all! I’ll just go with sapphire. I was hoping I could get a bigger stone. Might wait til September to see what sales pop up. :))

Keep your eyes peeled, I bet you can  Good luck!

It depends on the type of spinel. It's easier to find a nice blue color in a sapphire than a spinel. You can technically find cheap blue spinels, but they're either synthetic, diffused, or have a gray mask if they're cheaper than sapphire. You're right to go for sapphire. Above 2 carats, sapphires are a lot more plentiful than spinels.

A sizeable cobalt blue spinel might require a second mortgage on your house! Their colour is outstanding but so too is their rarity and price tag. Otherwise blue spinel tends to shift to the flat grey and depending on cut, can “black out”.
I think you will have more success going with a sapphire. A decent blue with vividness isn’t going to be cheap either but you will have much more to choose from.

Definitely go with sapphire if you are wanting a bigger stone. I think you could pay around what the Gemfix stone costs and get a bigger heated sapphire with comparable color if you were to actively search until September. With spinels of that intense blue color you'd be getting very little bang for your buck.

What have I been missing out on? What happens in September?

Sapphire is the September birthstone. A lot of gem vendors have sales based on the birthstone of the month.

I did think about Cobalt Spinel in my original post, however I did not believe they would be that easy to find, hence I discounted it.

The ones I have seen are very small.

DK :))

Yes cobalt blue spinel would be virtually unobtainable in that size! There is a big difference between blue spinel (that tends to be greyish) and the cobalt material from Luc Yen.

And the cobalt material from Luc Yen is not uniform in quality too. Top neon blue but also deep nice blue - some with a shift from blue to violet. Lighter cobalt spinel (which I love) but also washed out lighter and deeper colors.

Pics and videos with LED illumination will show a much better color in blue spinel and sapphire than in real life. So be careful.
