So I don't normally go for blue topaz, but I saw these beautiful (at least IMO) princess cut stones and I couldn't resist! I can't wait to get them set into earrings! How do people on here feel about blue topaz?

Congrats! I personally only have a pair of briolet topaz and gold earrings which my Mother in law bought as a gift for my birthday, way overpaid at Macy’s...they are very lovely to wear and though I wouldn’t have directly chosen them, I love them. I have a pink topaz and I love the ‘energy’ of the stone. I’d love to buy a natural blue topaz gem someday.
I think the stone really got undervalued with the flood of irradiated material that saturated the market some time ago. Since then, people generally only think of that when they think of topaz when it can be a rare and fabulous gem. Regarding the bluebtopaz, I find it’s really fun to wear and it really can look gorgeous.

Beautiful stones! In my opinion, you shouldn't worry about what others think. If you love them and the price is right, that is all that should matter! Some folks get hung up on the irradiation treatment to get blue topaz, but many of those same folks don't have a problem with "natural" blue topaz (which has been irradiated naturally in the ground) My philosophy: go with what you like. Since you asked for opinions though: my personal opinion is that I like that pair of topaz very much! Should make a stunning pair of earrings.

Almost all blue topaz is irradiated :D. Occassionally someone will have a piece which is not (I think there's a long discussion about this in acinom's thread, as bespoke gems had a piece of untamperred rough which produced three rings here). Anyway point is irradiation isn't something to be worried about in topaz as it is just how they get that surreal colour -- you can take it as a given that any piece you buy is irradiated unless you have a really really good reason to think otherwise. I like the pair :appl:, blue, bright and sparkly.

I would check the vendor's return policy before buying though, because I struggle with reading photos which are brightly lit with glass turntables.

Your blue topaz pair is going to make a lovely pair of earrings! I don’t get to see princess cut gems on here very often.

I think they will make beautiful earrings..of course, I am biased as the earrings I probably wear most, aside from my diamond hoops, are the preloved blue topaz ones I purchased off LT.

P.S. Yes, they are almost certainly irradiated but I got past that once I saw the how the color popped against my dark hair unlike so many other colored stones.

As far as I understand they would be very cheap if irradiated or other treatment, but very expensive if of natural color, though that seems very unlikely in a matched pair like this. One of the main drivers for treatment seems the need for consistent colors in large batches to be used in for mass-jewelry.

Thanks everyone! What attracted to me about this pair was the beautiful cut and color. They are irradiated but I don't really mind as I expect blue topaz in general to be treated. They are awfully huge though- nearly five carats each! I hope they won't look ridiculous on me! :O
