Ok so my secret is sorta out of the bag...my fiance and I can''t bear to give up the original e-ring setting since Quest only offered scrap metal value about $30-40 for it. So we''re making it into a RHR that I can wear sometimes and take off when my allergy begins to act up.

I''ve pretty much decided on blue zircon as a colored stone to set in my trellis setting after seeing IslandDreams'' yummy pendant! Can anyone give me some advice (and pics!) on what to look for in a blue zircon? Quest (Pete) is actually sourcing the stone so it''ll be his eyes that is actually picking it but I''d like to know a little more about the stone itself.

Thanks!

first thing to do is decide which color you like:
light blue - common
blue/green - common
med blue - less common
deep blue - hard to find.

Oooo I''m in love with them all except the light blue. Thanks Strm for all the great links!! After my e-ring reset I don''t think I could afford a pendant

but it looks great! I think I love deep blue most...well actually the teal like you!

Second question..Quest quoted me around $200 for a blue zircon that would fit my original setting about 6mm x 6mm is that a little expensive? It looks like the prices don''t really match up compared to the websites?

Quest is not based in Thailand, are they

6mm is small for zircon: and that poses a problem - you need a crystal with relatively deep color to have a small stone that does not look washed out. The logic holds for every light colored gem: even if deeper color is available in larger stones (which are not uncommon or too expensive), this doesn''t make small ones with good color more available too - quite the opposite.

Love the color, PrincessV. This is going to make a very nice RHR.

thats about right for US prices from a Jeweler
They are higher because it goes thru more hands.
The shipping is around $25 from AJS so you have to take that into account plus you have the hassles of dealing internetionaly which you avoid by going thru quest.
Its not a real great price but all things considered its not a rip off if the stone has nice color.

Thanks diamondlil!

Ana and Storm...thats true I really didn''t think about that until after I posted.

Slow start this morning what can I say? I definitely made sure to tell him I wanted something with a very deep blue green hue and sparkly too!

So going for a smaller stone with measurements like I listed 6mm x 6mm ish I should go for a dark blue in order to maximize color? Would that rule out the teal color since it is a bit lighter than the deep blue?

Oh I also forgot to add that $200 includes setting the stone as well...I kinda figured since I''d be there to pick up my new e-ring that I might as well get them to set the blue zircon that day as well.

Sorry for the confusion... no, I meant something rather different: that to get the same color showing in a smaller stone, better material is needed. E.g.: a half carat chip out of a relatively deep colored 10 carat zircon would be of strikingly lighter color than the big stone it came from.

About teal & deep: these relate to different things for me - one is about color (greenish-blue rather than blue) the other about tone (light versus dark).
34.gif

Re. tone: as far as I know, blue zircon is never too dark (like sapphires might, for example). So the ''darkest'' zircon would still have a nice color - probably considered ''medium tone'' for sapphire.

Re. hue: if there is ''blue'' zircon that is straight blue without a tinge of green, I have yet to see one. Some stones are less greenish than others, but it seem that ''blue'' zircon is all ''teal'' in fact. A very recognizable trademark color for this stone.

Some random 0.2...

That changes things a bit. Maybe the stone is more expensive, but... that less than $100 different in your total cost, no? It doesn''t sound as bad as $20 versus $200. Especially if the respective stone looks nice for both color and cut. If you wanted something different, it may make sense to make your own choices - you probably have more to choose from and more time to put into ti than Quest has. they are not going to hail 20 suppliers in search for the perfect 6mm blue zircon. It can''t mean the same for them as for you.

Just an idea

Ana, your advice definitely makes sense. Where would I go about looking for a 6mm square cut blue zircon? Everything I saw on that ajs page was too big except for that chip bundle link.

I do know that Quest did bring in some really nice aquas (much nicer than what I''m used to seeing) for Logan Sapphire. Hrm...if I can find one that I want in my e-ring I''d definitely would not be against it...

Blue zircon *drool*

I know!! I was oooing and aahing over that one...I wonder if that''ll fit in my setting??

I think it will be very pretty as a RHR. Ask Pete to bring in several so you can have a nice selection to choose from. I love blue zircon.

Yeah! And the red square next to it too... Sizes are not given, so I just too a pretty wild guess. Can''t hurt to ask

Pete says that that one is not a good candidate because of the points at the top and bottom...he''s afraid that I''ll chip it in a hurry.

Ana I only love the blue/bluish green hues

so whatever I find has to be that color...

I REALLY REALLY LOVE I mean LOVE

this http://www.webgraphicsengineering.com/Gemstones/query3.cfm?yVarieties=Blue&ySpecies=Zircon the second stone...the antique cushion cut...but its more than twice my budget plus Pete said he''d have to do major reconstructive work on my setting to make it fit.

Here''s the yummy yummy pic anyway!

Wait a minute... isn't the setting talked about on this thread the same you said left green marks on you fingers?
38.gif

If so, well, it sounds like the problem #1 'how to get a gorgeous blue zircon' and problem #2 'what to do with the old setting' may not be related after all
3.gif
Which removes the constraints on shape and size, and leaves wonderful and much needed room to choose the nicest color and most attractive cut for the little gem!

Honestly, there is a reason for this sort of 'wishful thinking' - the concave cut zircon is part of it, there is THIS and a couple others of similar color around there.

Yes Ana I wanted to use the same setting since I do have some sentimental value attached to it...plus as a RHR I won''t feel compelled to wear it everyday when the allergy acts up in a bad way...however looking at blue zircon its a rather ''soft stone'' right? Is it feasible for not worrying about chipping in a ring?

Or should I just completely give up on my idea of a blue zircon RHR and go for a sweet pendant like IslandDreams instead?
30.gif
With earrings of course!
31.gif

The whole idea started as ''something blue'' that I wanted to wear on the big day (still about heck..2 1/2 to 3 years away.)

It wouldn''t chip, but... look what a zircon looks like after years and years of wear: link to example / the edges and corners get abraded. The crown could be recut/repolished but taking the stone from the bezel setting must have made both owner and jeweler give up on that idea.

If this will not be an ''every day'' ring - why not though.

On the other hand, the thought of a set of three fine blue zircons cut to match in some surprising shapes... is a very, very pleasant thought! Weddings are a great excuse for buying jewelry, but none is needed (well, at least not on this forum!).

Btw: that is one unglamorous picture of a zircon - Goodness, how they caught that window in action!

Is the link right Ana? It seems like those are for colored diamonds??

Can''t have it all I guess.

This thread also made me come up with another idea for a RHR...
