So... can I get your thoughts on this sapphire? To be honest, I know very little about sapphires. I knew unheated was probably good, I liked the colour, there’s no window and no apparent colour shift.

What do you guys think? It’s a Portuguese cut with a cutlet like an OEC! Pics all taken in different lighting conditions.

Very pretty. One of my round blue sapphires has a flat cutlet like an OEC too.
And your setting plans.....

I saw that one yesterday and couldn’t get over how gorgeous the color looks. Congrats on that baby.:love:

Bron, could you educate me on why a non-OEC/Old Mine Cut stone would benefit from having an open cutlet? Does it let more light in? Is it just a stylistic choice? I’m curious. I hardly ever see colored gems cut this way.

Caysie has been tempting me with that halo of OMCs...

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this. BLUElicious! Cannot wait to see your beautiful new piece. Gorgeous.

As much as I would like to be a font of all knowledge, I too am intrigued as to why a cutter would put in a flat cutlet.
My thought, with mine ,was that perhaps there was a flaw or colour band or some other imperfection at the point and the decision was to take it out.
Coloured gems are all about the colour so a flat cutlet is neither here nor there and is actually hard to detect unless you look straight down at it.

I agree with Bron, the culet probably reflects the shape or the color zoning of the original rough. I would take it as reflecting the natural beauty and origins of the rock, almost like a beauty mark.

Crystal Dreams, you did really great! What a color! Congratulations on a gorgeous find!

That stone is amazing!!!!

Ahhhhhhhh you should totally do that cluster ring. Beautiful!:love::love:

I would think it was done because the cutter ran out of stone. The choice would be to reduce the angles on the pavilion to form a pointed culet, which would most likely make a larger window in the stone, or keep proper angles, and no culet.

It's gorgeous! I've always loved a Portuguese cut.

NICE color!! :D

Thanks guys! It means a lot to get a PS endorsement from all of you!! :D
I’ve worked with Caysie a lot, but Elle, prior to my purchase, I went and trawled through PS looking for pictures of your spinel ring from Caysie! How are you liking it? The colour of your stone was just... jaw dropping. I remember considering it when she first posted it, but not knowing anything about coloured stones, I held off at the time. The colour of this sapphire reminded me of when I saw your spinel on LT- so bright! I know they can’t compare, but it was another one of those omg moments for me lol.

Does anyone have a round sapphire with a large diamond cluster halo that they can show me? For some reason in these cluster halos, I’m more drawn to an oval type shape so I need some real life examples! I’ve been googling, but most of the ones I find are with oval or cushion cut stones.

Soxfan, the cluster halo reminded me of your gorgeous OEC cluster ring! I’ve been trying to visualise your ring with a blue stone lol.

Very lovely color!:))

What a luscious blue color! This is going to be a gorgeous ring for you.

Gorgeous stone, @Crystal_Dreams! I can't wait to see what setting you decide for it. :)

Some people believe that blue sapphire has properties that protect you from negative energy, promote mental clarity, reduce depression, and strengthen your courage & wisdom. Sapphire is related to the feng shui 'water' element, which is associated with purity, healing/renewal and flowing energy.

Now... I don't know how much, if any of that, is true, it may just be all superstition--- but that beautiful serene blue color definitely evokes a very calming, peaceful and soothing feeling and I hope that it brings you much joy and pleasure to own & wear.

You know what? I need all the protection from negative energies and all the strength and courage that I can get at this point in my life.

I love the blue of this stone- Caysie referred to it as a blueberry and I totally agree! Good Feng Shui doesn’t hurt either!

Beautiful blue sapphire Crystal Dreams!!! I love calling it a blueberry :P2.

Thanks, Gene, for providing your expert eye! That does seem like the most likely scenario and I know I would prefer a small open cutlet to a medium size window. On a gorgeous color like this, you don’t want to waste any material!

Gorgeous color and beautiful cut--a real winner. Congratulations!
