Bob’s Flashes – Direct from the Source
We have all heard of the jewelry stores here in the United States that advertise that they get their diamonds “Direct from the Source”. They go on the say that they take an annual buying trip to the diamond cutting centers of Antwerp or Israel and bring home the finest diamonds at the best prices available.
Does this mean that they actually buy all their diamonds on this one buying trip every year? Does this mean that only the finest diamonds come from one of these two great diamond-cutting centers? Maybe it means that the prices overseas are lower than one can buy in New York or Los Angeles? Actually none of these are true.
Do the storeowners go to Antwerp or Israel every year? Yes, they do go on vacation every year and they do visit one of these two places every year. In fact, they probably do buy a few diamonds on these trips. It is not only good advertising but is also a good tax write-off. I just happen to know of two such retailers. It is all perfectly legal and if the customers all believe that their diamond was hand picked by Mr. Jones on the latest buying trip, that ok too.
In actual fact, both of these stores call almost daily to one of these diamond wholesalers and get diamonds on memo to show prospective customers. I also know that both of these stores get diamonds on memo from other local diamond wholesalers. Were the diamonds cut in Antwerp or Israel? Yes, some of them. There were also some cut in India, New York, Russia and China.
So what is the big deal? No big deal at all! It is just like a hot dog company advertising, “our frankfurters are only made from the finest cuts of beef”. Sometimes, they are the finest cuts of beef and sometimes, people just want to believe they are made from the finest cuts of beef. . .and that is “ok” too.
