Can anyone recommend any books on the different historical periods and how they are represented with jewelry? I know of some of these eras in fine art (painting and drawing) but not jewelry.

Like, Edwardian vs Arts and Crafts, or Art Nouveau. I’d say more specially Western canon but I’m open

Would be interested in topics ranging from popularity of different gems, diamond cuts from different eras, how metal work and aesthetic differs…any good ones folks have come across? Maybe on specific topics like diamond cuts or more holistically covering different eras?

The treatise on goldsmithing by Benvenuto Cellini (the renaissance sculptor and goldsmith) is fascinating.

Two interesting bits: Rubies and emeralds were far more valuable per carat than diamonds. Foiling diamonds and other gemstones was a routine and expected part of a jeweller's practice.

A warning: If you have read his famous (and famously racy) autobiography, you may not believe everything he says.
