I REALLLLY wanted peonies for my wedding but it''s in October so none are available. Neither are rannunculus.

A florist suggested English Garden roses. She said there are some varities that have big blooms. Also suggested were adding in sweetpeas, dalias or hydrangeas for other things like table settings etc.

Anyone use any of these types of flowers at your wedding and what did you think of them? I need white, pink, maybe fuschia maybe apricot flowers.

Oh honey. I want Peonies too. Here''s what I know. Australia''s season is short
and will be done by the time mid- August. New Zealand will not have
them until the middle to end of October.

So when is your wedding? My florist is also a floral distributer and she is searching HIGH and LOW for me. If she finds some I''ll refer you to her. But the roses your florist recommended are very nice. I have seen them in bouquets. That''s what I''m going to sub if we can''t find the peonies.

My wedding is October 4th. It''s in Carmel. I guess we''ll find a local florist but if you have any suggestions on flowers I''d love to hear them. When is your wedding again? I saw a site for a florist in Australia and it said the season was done by then. My original flower budget was 1k but it''s looking closer to 2k now.

October is not a good time of year for Garden Roses - the old-fashioned varieties are not remontant on the whole and only flower once a year. The English Roses are better and have a longer and repeat flowering period.

They are the most gorgeous roses ever - I HATE hybrid teas, and see no point in having roses with no scent, so I''m trying very hard to get my hands on them for July.

You may find it easier to get them in October in the US depending on where you are and what the growing seasons are. Impossible over here at that time of year.

David Austin invented the English Roses - here''s his US website http://www.davidaustinroses.com/american/

Here''s one of my favourites - Rosa Lady Emma Hamilton:

I LOVE english roses!!
They are one of my favorites flowers! I don''t know much about their "season" so I can''t say whether they would work for your October wedding, but I know they come in several color varieties and they also smell great.

Wow, those are gorgeous! A florist here told me English Roses in October is the wa to go so that may work.... Thanks for the photo!

Sorry Violet! I feel for you, as the exact same thing happened to me! I wanted peonies but we are mid August and they will be gone in DC. But my florist also recommended garden roses, so hopefully they are all telling us the truth! I think the eng. garden roses are just gorgeous and I bet they will look great!

This might cheer you both up...

Traditionally, peonies were avoided as wedding flowers in the UK as they represent ''shame''.

Also, during the Middle Ages ''lunatics'' were covered with peony leaves and petals in order to cure them.

Hahha, thanks Pandora! That is too funny!

Peonies are one of my favourites! I adore them but at that time of the year they are a definite no go. Another option you might want to consider rose wise are esperance roses ...if your florist lets them blow open before using them they are divine and are similar to peonies as well. (I attached a pic of the roses)

The other flowers that your florist suggested are lovely. Just make sure that you don''t use hydrangea in your bouquet if it is going to be handtied because there is a HUGE likelyhood that they will wilt but in arrangements they should be just fine.

Good luck and keep us updated on what you decide.

:) Rebecca

Hi violet! I''ve been more of a lurker these days, but I read your post and just had to share the type of flowers I used in my wedding.

They are a variety of rose called Yves Piaget.... they look similar to peonies and are a great alternative since they are available year round (or so I''ve heard). I don''t think my blooms were fully open, but they are gorgeous flowers and I''ve seen them both slightly open and more full as well.... both look amazing. The latter may even be more "peony-like". And they have a divine scent that isn''t too overpowering. Anyways, they might be a good option for you!

Oh my goodness, that last pic was huge, sorry about that! I''m attaching another pic of the Yves Piaget slightly closed vs. open to give you a better idea of what it looks like. Hope this helps!

Wow those are very lovely. Where do you live and when did you get married? How were those flower price-wise compared to peonies?

Thanks for posting those!

Can I just say this is the best thread ever?! I was actually also intent on having peonies or ranunculus for my wedding (end of September), but now I know that''ll be a no go.

Thank you Pandora and chelle for the advice!!!

violet, roses will last much much longer than peonies anyway. And if you let your roses open up - give them a photo like the ones above - before your wedding, you can definitely recreate a peony like look.

i was googling those yves piaget roses because they are so gorgeous, and i came across this website that i thought i would share...the prices seem relatively reasonable, and there are lots of other varieties of garden roses on here too. looks like about $200 for 40-50 stems...if anyone has semi-artistic friends, they could get all their bridal party flowers here and have someone arrange them into bouquets?

Thank you so much for posting this site. I was having a hard time finding bulk flower sites with these types of flowers.
