I found this vendor here and have followed on IG. The product sells fast and I saw a bracelet I wanted. I hit purchase and realized it was the wrong size. Minutes later I asked to cancel the order and was told it was $265 to cancel. I then said to not cancel and she said too late. This is unbelievable! I would NOT recommend.

Is there any mention of a cancellation or restock fee on her site? If not then I don’t see how she can legally charge you a fee for cancelling an order. I am not an attorney however.

Ugh! That’s awful. I’m so sorry!
Would you mind linking the IG store? I’m sure I follow a couple “old mine” shops. Thank you in advance.

She said there was but I couldn't find it!

I edited above - thank you for the reminder! Here's also the link https://www.oldmineshop.com/shop it's a shame because she has a huge following and beautiful items.

It does say that she charges a 10% restocking fee and you can only cancel within 1 hr of purchase. Her policies are so restrictive a “no refunds” would be clearer. Sorry you are out the money and I think she should have given you the option to not cancel like you requested.

Right, what would be the harm in having you complete the purchase after all? Doesn’t sound like someone I would ever want to do business with.

Will it be too big or too small on you? Want to share a pic?

yes and it still shows available on the site!

I had to search hard to find the policy and wow that’s draconian imo. If you tried to cancel within minutes, it’s really crappy to keep 10%. Especially since all of her stuff sells out so fast according to her. And then you try to uncancel and she still won’t complete the sale?! That’s awful. I’m SO sorry that happened. :(

Here’s the part of the policy in question so others don’t have to dig:

Cancellations
If you wish to cancel your purchase this must be done within one hour of completing the purchase by sending me a message on Instagram (@oldmine_jewelry). I will then refund your money. A 10 % restocking fee will be deducted from the amount.

“Can’t do anything about it” is the worst customer service response you can possibly give. It’s her site, she can absolutely do something about it, she just doesn’t want to.

Ugh, just reeks of someone with a God complex.

Thanks. for that! It is crazy. I'm fighting it with the credit card company so we'll see. The $$ won't kill me but it's just wrong and I do think the PSA is important.

Of course she can. She doesn't care. It was literally within a minute or two.

I understand you are frustrated -- but vendor is following her policies. The policies are easily found under "Terms" on her website. IMO, the policies are not draconian but much the same as those posted by many other independent online jewelry vendors.

It is on you as consumer to educate yourself when checking out and/or buying from a new-to-you vendor.

AFAIK, once you "cancel" an order, there is no option to "uncancel" it; customer would have to click "purchase" once listing showed item was available.

I think it’s an odd policy that isn’t customer-centric but it is HER policy.

Too bad and sorry it happened! I’d be annoyed. But not much you can do, unless your credit card company happens to side with you…

I’m always a bit wary of overly overly stylized Instagram accounts…eye candy only for me…

I’m struggling to understand how it costs her anything if you say cancel and she says there’s a restocking fee, and you say OK, don’t cancel.

I'm not questioning the policy (that I didn't happen to see) I just think it's a bad business practice policy or not. I will now never purchase from her knowing the policy and I wanted others to be aware. That's all.

Yes, lesson learned. That said hopefully I saved someone else from that lesson.

If she is using paypal and most small players do, paypal is no longer refunding processing charges.
The other processors for the most part never did.
So once the payment was entered in paypal she was charged transaction fees that will not be refunded.
When paypal made the change a lot of small sellers were forced to go with restocking fees.

Draconian is defined as unnecessarily harsh or severe; taking 10% after wanting to cancel within minutes and then refusing to uncancel to let the consumer go ahead with the purchase falls under that definition imho. Many IG vendors have way better policies than that.

It's not paypal but there may be something similar. Lesson learned :(

This is true but the percentage is 3% I believe? Also the consumer wanted to go ahead with the sale…

I am not sure of the exact % these days.
As far as I know and I am pretty sure is the case, once its canceled it would take a new payment with another processing fee to buy it.
So she would be paying 2x processing fee on it.
One for the canceled sale and one for the actual sale.

There is no excuse for someone being rude about it, I am just explaining the likely reason that should have been explained in a nice manner.

It honestly doesn't matter if it covers the overhead of her fees to PayPal IMO. The fact of the matter is that it's her policy whether we think it's fair or not - no one is being forced to shop with her, so she can choose as many outlandish policies as she wants!

It doesn't mean I don't find it objectionable and surprising. Thanks @upgradingmama for sharing your experience and I'm sorry you learned the hard way. Yours isn't the only thread recently that should help us take pause and really read policies carefully before making purchases, as they vary across vendors and no one should make assumptions about whether they can cancel or return purchased items.

IMHO, the title of this thread is incredibly misleading and it is disappointing that OP has chosen to frame herself as a victim of unfair business practices.

By OP's actual account, this vendor followed her posted policies.

OP acknowledges she failed to look up vendor's policies.

OP surely is aware that once a transaction has been cancelled, that transaction is closed.

OP never once said the vendor was rude; OP only said that vendor advised it was too late to move forward with original purchase transaction presumably because vendor had already processed OP's cancellation request.

This thread would be more accurately titled "Reminder: Doublecheck Vendor Policies Prior to Purchase"

Um - Don't put words in my mouth. I never said I was a "victim of unfair business practices". I said buyer beware and that I wouldn't recommend working with this vendor. And, you can title any thread how you want and I will title it how I want. My post my choice (until the supreme court gets involved with that too).
