I need some advice. My girlfriend and I are thinking about buying an engagement ring in the LA jewelry district but neither one of us has a clue what a "good deal" looks like there. Every price we''ve been given has been abour half of what they have listed as "retail" before any haggling. Does anyone know what the average mark-up is for engagement rings (settings only) in the LA jewelry district? Or what I could expect to spend on a $1800 (retail) 18k WG setting? Also, how can we know for sure we''re getting what we pay for?

Thanks!!

Depending on how many stones are in it, the weight, 14kt, 18kt, platinum? I am guessing $600 for a nice pave set mounting with about .35ctw of diamonds.?? I am taking a stab at it~

This does not remotely describe the object you are looking for. A white gold setting can be anything starting with $50 and allot of stuff fits into any conceivable price range above that.

Can you describe or poin to an online example of what you are looking for?

Most sellers listed around here have some selection of setings, so you could just brose a bit until you find an appealing model. Usually, there are dozens of variations that can be found once a starting point like that is found.

For starters, weddingband.com, whiteflash, niceice, diamondsbylauren, icestore and artofplatinum could give you an idea over a rather wide price range. Most platinum models can also be made in WG is needs be. There are at leats a couple dozen more online sources listed here and there on PS, but it is not easy to point to one before knowing a little more about the style you are looking for.
