Not sure if this is the right spot to post this...but I figure everyone here would have the most first hand experience purchasing from loupetroop.

There is a ring I am currently interested in for my anniversary present, but the seller doesnt have certs or anything because its "vintage" and no paperwork /appraisal on it. All she has is "verbal" comments from a jeweler saying "the diamonds are great".

I like to have faith in humanity, but because that this is my first time I (or I should say my husband, lol) will be buying jewelry used/not from a company, I am worried I should be expecting more info.

Is LT fairly reliable? Would you demand a written appraisal? It is final sale so I do not have an inspection period.

Appreciate any feedback, thanks!

I would say it partially depends on the price of the piece. If it's any kind of considerable sum of money, it would be quite reasonable to want to see some kind of appraisal or paperwork. Most LT sales are final, and I wouldn't feel comfortable buying something with no paperwork at all unless I knew the seller (say if it was a well known and respected PSer) and trusted her opinion. There are a handful of PSers out there whom I would trust with a final sale based just on their opinion. For everything else, I'd want some kind of guarantees or a return policy. Good luck, and I hope you find something you love!

I think it's important to realize that when you're buying used and getting a discount off retail, it's in large part because of the risk involved. If you want to buy something with all the protections of a regular store, go to a local B&M or order online from a well-known vendor.

Honestly, if I was selling something used and vintage that was fairly low cost and a buyer demanded an appraisal, I just wouldn't sell it to that buyer. Written appraisals from reputable appraisers are usually at least a couple hundred dollars...if you're willing to pay for an appraisal of the piece then I think you can ask for one, but otherwise, I wouldn't.

If there are clear photos and the seller is a known PSer, I wouldn't worry too much, personally. You could also ask for their eBay name and check out that feedback too. But if you're just not comfortable with buying used, then don't buy it. There are plenty of standard stores that sell jewelry.
