If I can''t find an online dealer (blue nile, etc) that doesn''t have both the diamond and the setting I want, is there really anything wrong with buying the diamond from one online dealer, the setting from another online dealer, and then having the diamond set into the ring locally? Do jewelers mind people doing this? Is setting a diamond a simple task for most jewelers? Is it something that can easily be screwed up??

Thanks!!!

I wouldn''t bother if I were a jeweler. You''re going to offer me $50 to set your stone. But if anything happens to the stone or the setting I''m going to owe you thousands. Hardly seems worth it.

You can buy the setting and diamond seperatly but it does make things a little more complicated. Why not have the seller of the setting do the setting of the diamond? Just make sure that they will take full responsibility for your diamond while they set it, in case anything were to happen such as the diamond getting chipped. If you have someone else set it, you will have to deal with 3 parties instead of just 2.

You can also have the setting sent to the diamond vendor and have them set it. They will surely insure their own diamond while setting it.

Thanks, this is what I was thinking too...I''ll keep searching online.
I want to get the diamond from James Allen. Looking through their settings again..

I''ve heard that when possible, it''s preferable to have the diamond mounted by the seller, because then if there are any problems, you won''t have merchants ''blaming'' the other guys, and not taking responsiblity for them.

I think one advantage of buying a mounting and having it set locally is that you''ll have a convenient place to go for maintenance, sizing, repairs, etc etc..

Just some thoughts...

I''d try to get it all done by the diamond vendor, but if not, as others said, have the seller of the setting set the diamond.

Jasontb really nailed it I think. The person to set the stone should really be the guy that sold it to you. Too many bad things can happen to a diamond as it''s being set for any but a fool, or a man that has been released of liability to take the job...especially if you bought the stone from his competitor. That''s my honest opinion. Others may disagree.
