I received my gorgeous emerald cut diamond solitaire a few weeks ago. I’m absolutely obsessed but I noticed something that is driving me a bit psycho. When I tilt her to the side and a side step turns off; I see my shank through the diamond’s step. There is absolutely no windowing straight on, but when I tilt my ring to the side the reflection through the step is pretty obvious. So like an obsessive compulsive maniac; I started searching through TONS videos of emerald cut diamond rings on Instagram. I noticed this in pretty much every single video that I saw. So calling other emerald cut owners; can you see your shank to some degree through your steps? Particularly curious when you tilt it to the side?

yep every one at one angle or another.

I probably could if it weren't so dirty.
Is this an angle at which you would normally view and enjoy your diamond?

This might bother you for a little while but at some point, you'll say, OMG am I just stupid? This thing is gorgeous!

Yes.
Diamonds are facetted to have light return back to your eye when looking “straight down”.
The moment you tilt the diamond (or any gemstone) the path of light will not “work” the same and you will “see through” out to whatever is on the other side ie ring setting or skin.

Thank you everyone. This makes me feel a bit better. I have it set very low with a thicker band and small donut. I have played with it and I know the exact spot that I’m seeing. I think a more open basket setting would have been the best way to go. I just had it set and I love the setting so I’ll have rock it for a bit, but there is definitely going to be a reset in my future to help minimize the “issue”. I would still love to here from more EC owners if anyone else wants to weigh in.

It’s called a tilt window

Gonna happen - certain settings will be more noticeable for sure but every EC has this tilt window tendency. one cocktail and you’ll not notice

caelsen, I was thinking of you with this thread. It's like a horse with a bit of a straight shoulder but his neck is put on so lovely you don't mind.
I suspect fancy cuts especially can have attributes that outshine their weak areas. The EC in this thread sounds like it's just killer. Would love a photo.

Great analogy and I own that horse. Here she is - way too up hill in the shoulder but she’s sooo comfortable at a gallop, made her a great hill topper and field horse. 8BBF13A4-0B26-4204-8B53-9123D0A6AB68.jpeg

My Grand Prix dressage horse had the shortest neck ever; he would use it for ill will whenever he got the inclination, as well.

he still went from green broke to the Grand Prix in four years, so we didn’t hold it against him!

Yes, s an old timer told me “ The shorter the neck, the faster they can get you into trouble.“ There is some truth in that :)

Holy balls, kb1gra! Maybe the short neck made it easier for him to shift weight to his hindquarters.

I believe horses invented Halloween. What's rattling in the bushes? RUN!! Kick away the wolves!
Apologies to OP, whose EC I would love to see.
