So I'm hoping that all you experts here can help me...I am looking for a 2-4 ct stone to possibly have set east-west as an alternative to my e-ring. I am very sensitive to inclusions and would like to know your thoughts on this particular stone. It says vs/eye clean but I think that means something a little different than it does with diamonds (feel free to correct me if I am wrong)

I seem to be drawn to this particular vendors cutting but I am open to suggestions ...Thank you for your help!

You can ask him about whether it has any haziness and how eye clean it is from 6 inches away. I am more concerned about the colour. In the video, it is extremely dark until he shone a strong spotlight directly onto the stone so this is a stone that is best worn during the summer months.

With coloured stones, clarity terms used with diamonds, like vs, vvs, etc, are not really applicable. Most vendors don't use them. Eye clean is what you should expect if you want a clean stone. It's possible to find loupe clean or almost loupe clean stones but that'd make a search much harder.

I don't think that stone would look great IRL, and it may very well look brown under fluorescent light, as many shifty garnets do.

Assuming you're coming from the diamond side of PS, with coloured stones, colour is king. Not cut. Precision cuts are a nice extra but not necessary to get a beautiful, great performing and dispersive stone.

Just bouncing in to say that if you are okay with the color, as others have cautioned it will likely be darker and a bit browner in hand, then it will be fine inclusion-wise. If you loupe it, you may see some interesting flaws in the stone, but with the unaided eye, it will appear clean. This vendor is very good about accuracy in assessing the clarity of his stones. So if you are okay with the rest, then you should be good to go!

If you're going to be looking at colored stones as an option, you will have to revise your thinking about inclusions. Thats not to say you can't get some very clean stones (you can) but it will depend on the type of stone it is. The focus should be more on the color, and the cut. Cut can help color in how it makes the stone appear in your environment.

Most online gem dealers will have this on their sites somewhere. It can be helpful for those who might not have ever bought gemstones before.

Type I Usually eye clean
Aquamarine
Chrysoberyl, yellow and green
Heliodore
Morganite
Quartz, smoky
Spodumene, all
Tanzanite
Tourmaline, green
Zircon, blue
Diamond

Type II Usually Included
Andalusite
Alexandrite
Corundum, all
Garnet, all
Iolite
Peridot
Quartz, amethyst, citrine, ametrine
Spinel, all
Tourmaline, all but green, red and watermelon
Zircon, all but blue

Type III Almost always included
Emerald, Red Beryl,
Tourmaline: red and watermelon

The stone looks good cut-wise, the color is something that I think is quite personal. Maybe its the angle of how the stone is currently sitting, but I can't say I'm in love with the color. It could be totally different in person though, as it can sometimes hard to read an image.

As Chrono mentioned, ask about haziness.

I agree with asking about the haziness, looks to be a little cloudy.

Wow I feel like I have to relearn everything I thought I knew lol

Thanks for the advice...I will email him and ask if that stone is eye clean and if it appears hazy. I think the thing that I am having the most difficulty with is the color. To me the color looks ok but then again I know nothing about colored stones...

Malayas are the most notorious color shifters, and it will probably go very brown in some lighting.

What color are you looking for?
